Looking After Your Mouth
Hi Everyone, especially the new members of the community about to start chemo - i just wanted to share with you about looking after your mouth!
It is so easy to get ulcers and mouth sores with the amount of drugs you are about to get put through your system. I am about to have my 5th chemo treartment tomorrow and My amazing dentist recommended Biotene Mouthwash and Toothpaste - you brunsh min twice if not 3 times per day and mouth wash the same if not more.
I have only had one ulcer in 12 weeks and that was due to being run down. This has been a saviour as I have seen other patients in pain because of mouth sores..... I have heaps of other tips that are getting me though as well if you need a hand! But this one was so valuable! xxx

- SunMemberHi Shelli heat packs are a godsend for my sore back and plenty of rest. I also use a pick up stick/grabber that was given to me by the OT in rehab that I use for picking up things when I can't bend down. I've had tumours in my spine and find I can't exercise anymore or walk like I used to. I take osteo panadol and endome when the pain is really bad. I don't have any symptoms from my liver tumours yet but Only from my back and that's been the case from when I was diagnosed in Oct 2012. I woke up one day after a few weeks of niggling back pain and it was so excruciating I couldn't get out of bed. The tumours were hitting on nerves and that was causing the painful spasms. Radiation and Abraxane shrunk the tumours in the spine but I'm left with curvature of the spine and back pain that doesn't go away. I think the drugs I'm on also contribute to the stiffness in my back and joint pain. Worst thing is getting out of bed in the morning and best thing is getting into bed at night and resting my weary bones!!!

On Sun, hearing you on the bone and sore back! I have that as well.. not pleasant at all... especially the 5 days after chemo! If you know of any good tips, please share! :-) x
- SunMemberI used bi carb soda in warm water as a mouth wash 3 times a day and got no mouth ulcers for the 3 times I was on chemo. Wish there was a quick fix for my creaking bones and sore back caused by tumours to my spine. Sue

- paulagMemberYep, same here. No ulcers. Used biotine and also chewed their chewies. Did get a dry mouth tho, and still do. I'm thinking it will always be like this. Xx

Yep! Biotene mouthwash is a winner. I took such care of my teeth during chemo. Flossed carefully, rinsed with Biotene then added a calcium mousse. Brilliant! Also rinsed with water after eating mostly. And sometimes with bicarb in water.

ME too!! I found that everytime i used the mouthwash - it was a little relief every time. My 1st Chemo was so bad on the mouth and the throat i never thought I would get thruogh it - everything was like razor blades down my throat and of course you have to try and drink 2-3L of water - arrgggg so painful - because of the radiation on the shoulder and eye as well - it all compounded I was willing to do anything - this gave the most amazing relief - and from then on - smooth sailing! :-)
