Hospital stay for fever

I guess a bit of a moan. I came to hospital ED a week ago because my temp hit that magic 38. I had finished my 4th AC 2 weeks earlier and was about to start taxol. When I came in I had no idea what a journey this would be. They decided to give me antibiotics 'just in case' although there were no signs of bacterial infection. And they started testing, and testing, and testing but everything they try comes back negative but I don't get any better. The fever is getting higher and higher and although ive had bad headaches and now a dry cough, they still don't know the cause. The antibiotics ended up being the cause of the headaches and maybe some of the bigger fevers but even now that I've stopped them I haven't had the miraculous recovery promised. Also, they told me about 4 days after my cough started that it was probably because I've been lying down and resting too much. There was almost an accusation that I've just been being too lazy but at no point did anyone say my lungs would pack in if I didn't walk around...and I always thought when you are sick, you rest. I just want to go home. I miss my husband and kids and I feel like this place just makes me sicker . I can't get more than a couple of hours sleep at a time because of the constant OBS, blood tests, scans and medications. I'm feeling frustrated and angry and scared. Has anyone else had a fever like this that just went on and on with seemingly no cause?
  • Thanks so much everyone. I'm still in hospital and I continue to deteriorate. My temps sit around 39 most of the day and now my heart rate is struggling more and my oxygen levels keep dropping. They are continuing to test but nothing is coming up.  I am now feeling more accepting that I am just going to be here for a long time but it is very tricky to have any positivity given the downhill trend.

It is hard for me to believe that I could be here. I was so healthy before. And now, every day I feel I'm just hanging on.

    Thanks again for support
  • Better sure than sorry I reckon @Lythe  -  If in Doubt, Get Checked Out!

Mind you - people often leave hospitals with more bugs than they went in with!  :(  Sadly, they can be unhealthy places to be!

I hope your temp is controlled & you are home soon.    Take care & big hugs xxx
  • Sounds like you are a hot little number at the moment. Drink plenty of water and get strong. As to not sleeping, get hubby to bring in some of those squishy sponge earplugs. They are genius. <3
  • I had fever once on the weekend while on chemo.  The fever was 37.5 and I also had a cough and wheezing.  We called the home doctor who could not identify any issues.  The doctor said he also works in emergency and they sometimes find patients on chemo presenting with high fever, but all their tests come up negative and no specific reason for the fever can be identified. Maybe check with the doctors if this might be the case with you.

I also went to the GP the next day and did x ray and sputum tests which were all negative.

Good luck and hoping you are back home soon.
  • Oh dear you poor thing. Hopefully your white cell count is recovering by now.
Are you getting a lot of reflux?Sometimes a cough can be caused by that. A dry cough isn't related to lying down, it's usually moist and to  be honest by the 4th AC you probably need to rest.
Hang in there. You can do this. Many members have spent time in after treatment. As boring and stressful as it is, it's safer to be monitored whilst you still have the
    temp.
Fingers and toes crossed your fever breaks soon.
