Just wondering if anyone has had the horrible side effects of severe joint/bone pain from the waist down after their shot of the white blood cell booster Pegfilgrastim? My oncologist said it could be handled with panadol, well a trip to the ER because it was unbearable has left me having 5mg endone every four hours, but this ain’t working. I feel horrible already from the normal chemo side effects (TC, first dose) and to have this on top, plus adding more drugs to my body is starting to really stress me out. I cannot seem to find any info on Australian reputable sites about side effects and treatments of for the Pegfilgrastim. So I’m willing to hear any advise to get me through this crappy time !!

You need to start the Claratyne before you have the shot, it won't work afterwards once the pain sets in the damage is done. There is no reason not to try Restavit. If nothing else it will knock you out at night

I had TC but was not offered this drug as a matter of course. When I queried it with the oncologist she said they were monitoring my white blood cells and would give it to me if I needed it. I never did, and I did not get sick. Could you ask your oncologist if you could try your next round without it and see how you go?

Yes. Had awful reaction. Ended up in ed. The pelvic pain was beyond awful. I had a pv bleed with it too. Went to ed as it was so painful and terrifying. White cells were through the roof.i refused to have it ever again. I managed the remaining cycles carefully and without incident.

Yes it is common and I needed pain killers for a day or so after (mine was my neck and back) However Clarityne, an antihistamine has been reported on here as assisting with dramatically reducing that pain. I haven't tried it but a number of women have and state it really helped.Some chemo also causes pain. I was on taxol weekly and got terrible leg pains around day 3....I didn't have Pegfilgrastim during that part of chemo so I know it wasn't that causing it. I didn't have the pain initial round but it got worse each round.

I loathed that drug @Amazonian I've had chemo twice and found that Loratadine (Claratyne) made the world of difference. Ask your onc, but I have never heard of anyone being told they can't take it and it is standard practice in some places. Start the day before chemo and take one a day for 7 days. Some oncologists poo poo the idea, but there have been studies in the UK that suggest it is helpful. At $1 a day it's worth a go.The theory is that the antihistamine helps with the bone oedema caused by the Peg injection. Some people have a worse time with that than others and there is no way I could cope with just Panadol. Mxx

Totally agree @zoffiel. Far better to say that "most" won't have pain but this is what to do should you have it.

What ever it takes @Amazonian. It's just a pity no-one saw fit to prepare you before your first round. I don't understand the apparent attitude with that drug; "If we don't say anything it might not happen." Sure, some don't have any pain, but those that do can end up both in agony and frightened because they don't know what's happening. Mxx

Just a follow up from my 2nd round of TC.
I did the Claratyne 3 days prior to my Nuelasta and up until today. It may have helped slightly, the pain didn’t seem as bad initially, but it was still came on quite bad.
This time around I have managed to stay on top of my pain a bit better with Targin, Endone, and Panadol.

Thanks lovelies. Great info. Am going to ask the question as to wether I need it again and if so I’m starting the Claratyne early to hopefully alleviate the pain!

I had this but only after my first round and my white cells were through the floor. I did have some bone pain but used either panadol osteo or if bad at night and it was messing with my sleep I took an endone. Usually only a day or two but I did go for pain control quickly. I had too many chemo side effects to manage to be miserable from other pain as well

Again agree with Zoffiel- it does need to be taken before the shot not after... and I hope if you try the restavit this round it works for you! It does make you really drowsy daytime so half should be enough at night, I slept well with it. I really hope you get relief with something! That bone pain is awful :( if you have a bath try espolm salts or even magnesium oil spray! I rubbed it in and it helped too. I used it before discovering the Restavit and used both if needed. Anything is worth a go...
