Hair loss products

Hi ladies

I'm wondering if any of you out there have tried any of the hair loss products that are on the market?  Eg Regaine or Evolis?

My hair, prior to chemo, was always classified as 'fine', but I had a lot of it.  After chemo, it took SO long to grow back and it's nothing like it was before.  Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to have ANY sort of hair back on my head at all.

It's extremely patchy though.  I have to strategically comb my hair on my crown to try and disguise my 'bald patches'.

Any thoughts or opinions any of you have on these hair loss products would be appreciated.

Linda

  • I'm  using a L'Oréal product. My hair was growing back on taxol but not in the hairline.  Since starting this..it has rapidly thickened. ..so much so people commented within 2 weeks about my hair growth. I was told ...must be finished chemo...and also...will only stimulate hair folicles still there.

I use the serum at night and the shampoo and conditioner in the morning.

  • I have been trying Rogaine (minoxidil) for two months now.  I am not sure if it's helping or not.  I desperately hope that it will.  I've read that it can take 3 or 4 months to have an effect so I'm going to keep trying.  I asked the oncologist whether there was any possibility of medical treatments for the hair loss but he had nothing for me.  Seeing that he told me my hair would grow back when he gave me the chemo I thought he'd have some sort of suggestions but no help from that department.  I've found the cheapest way to buy the Rogain or Minoxidil is through ebay.  I just want enough hair to have a normal hair style and able to feel smart and professional and not like I'm a senior citizen before my time.  If it works I will report back.

  • My regrowth is chalk white...I thought it would stay. ..so thanks for sharing.

  • It's over 3 years since I finished chemo and I reckon my hair is still changing. I got frizzy chemo curls ( my hair had always been dead straight) and the initial growth was chalk white. Over time it got much darker (ie less grey!) than before chemo and then developed a blonde element. 18 months ago, I started getting an unusual degree of hair loss, no real reason ever detected, but it has settled and it's fine. We are all grateful to get hair back, but I suspect for some at least it can take a long time to recover, so you may still get improvement .

  • R U taking hormone supressants ? If U R it could explain hairloss.

I really would try speaking with an endocrynologist first as chance is they can find the root cause which would give you a better chance of dealing with it...

  • Hi Jel

I had my last chemo in December 2013. Seeing it was that long ago I just think my hair is as good as its going to get unfortunately. I'm very self conscious about it.

  • I finished chemo a year ago and still look awful in the hair department.  No eyebrows, a very receeded hairline and a fine fuzz of short hair that is nowhere near 'normal'.  Since realising that my hair regrowth has not followed the pattern of what the oncologist told me I have done a little research and discovered there are a small percentage of women whose hair never grows back much at all so I feel lucky to have the bit I've got.  It seems to me that it is growing although at about a tenth of the speed and very thin.  I'm hoping for some improvement over the next year or two and am glad that over the months I am seeing a tiny bit of progress.  I wish the oncologist had prepared me for this.  It's harder than losing a breast.

  • Hello Linda, my hair was very thick before chemo. I just checked my diary and I finished chemo on the 19 April.  Three months ago! It is growing back so so slowly. The top of my head the slowest. I agree with Jel I don't think there is much that can help.

So much we have to go through. Hang in there.

  • Have not tried anything (still having Chemo) bit wondering how.long has it been since Chemo for you?

Is there a chance that it is relatively recent as it couldntake months for it to recover properly (or so I have been told)

Also worthwhile speaking to an endocrinologist first to see if there is a reason for it - could be that your system has not recovered and maybe they can help work out why it is not growing as it did before...

I am just doubtfull that hair loss solutions designed for men would work for women...

    All the best

    Jel.
