Finger and Toe Nails
Hi Everyone, I know I have spoken to you all about this before but.......I am 4 weeks post chemo and my toe and finger nails are great! In fact they are even stronger than ever ! I have been giving them a ridiculous amount of attention though....
Anyway......am I just kidding myself that I’ve avoided the nail drama of chemo or could they still turn to poo ? Lol.

- AfraserMemberOh I know that feeling! Even worse than the feeling is digging down when the toes are a big less sensitive and unearthing the dead tissue therein! Joy. But it does no harm (except possibly to one's sense of aesthetics) and it finally passes. All part of the experience.Sign in to react to this post
- FlaneuseMemberNearly three months post chemo my toenails are still horrid. Fingernails seem to be getting stronger - i.e. less flaky and ridged - but they're also unconfortably "thick". They feel as if there's something under them all the time - the way you feel when you've been in the garden without gloves and have dirt under your nails.Sign in to react to this post
- FletchMemberThanks to all.
@LittleBlueWren I am using the Body Shop almond oil every night and the cream twice a day. It may seem excessive but I really struggled with losing my hair , and I’ve always had good nails so I just upped the attention I give them in the hope I don’t lose them too....
I will try to post photos of the products for you.Sign in to react to this post - Jen79xMemberIce during chemo helps !Sign in to react to this post
- MjhekeMember@Fletch, maybe discuss it with your oncologist first, but you can use a cream called hirudoid for the phlebitis. You can buy I over the counter at the pharmacy and helps with symptoms, it also helps with the pain. I was recommended after I had phlebitis after surgery many years ago. It also helped the bruising go more quickly on my breast after surgery.
See this scholarly articleManagement of superficial vein thrombosis and thrombophlebitis: status and expert opinion document(you’ll have to google it as i’m Not sure how to upload it😜)
Topical analgesia with nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory creams applied locally to the superficial vein thrombosis/superficial thrombophlebitis area controls symptoms. Hirudoid cream (heparinoid) shortens the duration of signs/symptoms.
All the the best with your nails! I have my fingers crossed 🤞

- I am eight weeks post chemo and my nails seem to be lifting from the 'fingertip' end, not really painful but I am worried they are going to come off over the next month or so.@Fletch I would love to know what you are doing with your nails if you don't mind. What are you using on them?Sign in to react to this post
- FletchMemberI do have thrombosis phlebitis in my right arm ( blood clot in a vein) . It’s about 12 cms long. Apparently not dangerous and no treatment. It’s just wait and see......
Its painful but you just ignore that, like most special gifts from bc. Lol.
Anyone else had a clot in the arm from canulas and chemo? They think mine started from the anaphylactic reaction I had.Sign in to react to this post
