Cording

Hi to all, rads have started, and I've had 9 out of 21 treatments so far. Being a loyal exercise freak to prevent lymphoedema, I've hit an obstacle with some cording forming in my armpit, and a pulling sensation that extends down to my elbow. How frustrating, however my radio oncologist has referred me to a specialist physiotherapist who deals with cording and lymphoedema. Has anyone else experienced cording ? I'm told that it is treatable, and that it does go away. I'm someone who just wants to get on with the getting better bit, and find this another annoying hurdle. Good grief !! What next ? Trace ????

Thanks Mel, sounds like I'm on the right track, so glad for a physio referral. Will keep going with my exercises and stretches in the meantime. Not looking forward to that popping thing, Trace ??????

  • Hey Tracey. I too have had cording. I was told to stretch it out with my fingers by breast nurse and felt that pop sensation first time i did it. Freaked me out but it works. I see a lymphodema physio now and she has taught me lymphatic drainage massage for both my arm and boob. I also do walking up wall arm stretch twice daily whilst in shower. take care.

  • Hi Tracey,

I had cording that worked its way down to my wrist.

I was getting really frustrated & was all set to get a Physio referral  - until I got back into my regular exercise regime (6km run, followed by 15 min of hand weights, push ups, sit ups, stretches etc 3 - 4 days per week).

After 1 week I noticed the tightness & pain starting to subside & yes like the others have mentioned the popping sensation is weird (felt like a strong electric shock). It freaked me out until I realized it was actually relieving the tension in my arm. Now 4 weeks later the cording has gone.

    Regards Mel

Thanks Adean, hopefully we'll get on top of it. Cheers, Trace ??????

  • I will never forget that damn cording yes for me the only thing was my massage therapist and the exercises religously, I was shown how to massage in the shower with sorbelene and yes that pop or ping is the weirdest thing. It did take quite a while to go. Good luck.

Thanks Paula, I won't be so worried about it then. Good grief, the things that happen to us along the way. Keep smiling, Trace ??????

  • No, it didn't hurt, weird feeling, kind of freaked me out until I was told it was a good thing.

Thanks Mum, did it hurt when they went pop ? I know that it's just scar tissue, eek !! Sounds awful ??

  • Hiya Tracey, fantastic that you have a referral to someone who specializes in this. I had lymphedema and cording. My lymphedema OT would actually show me where the rope like cords were and get me to massage them between my fingers. Another great exercise is the one where yiu walk your fingers up the wall as high as you can go. That really stretches the 'cords' out. I actually felt mine go 'pop' which freaked me out a little bit but was apparently a good thing.

    Hope this helps.
