Chemotherapy, neulasta side effects

Hi everyone

I had first chemotherapy treatment (TC) last Wednesday, followed by the Neulasta injection on Thursday. In addition to the usual horrible side effects today (out of the blue) I have what I would describe as moderate to extreme pain/ache/sensation in my lower back. I was told I might experience pain in my long bones for a couple of days following the Neulasta injection - but this is day 7. I've been to see the GP and she has given me some stronger painkillers which have made the pain bearable.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this as the GP didn't seem to have any explanation and it does not appear in the typical side effects for either TC or Neulasta, any ideas?

Cheers

Carol

  • Hi Carol ( you brought back some memories from only a few months ago ) I had 2 neglasta shots on my 2nd and 3rd AC chemo had so much pain in my back, legs I was relieved when I said no more of them the doctors said no more I only took panadine extra as I hated endone and some of the others and hated the effects of the steroids. I did , however, get a script for Atvian which is a Valium x anti aniexty that worked a treat for me as I found chemo such an emotional and physical roller coaster.  After 4 rounds of AC I had 9 wkly taxol more bone pain - I was suppose to have 12 but one day I couldn't feel my feet was told to stop due to nerve damage- so just be aware to tell the oncologist all your symptoms I hope you get through this soon chemo is not easy on a plus note I made it through 5 months now onto 5 weeks of radio and starting to feel more myself - huge cyber hugs ( gently )

  • I find drink plenty of water and move. I walk a fair way on early morning and sunset when I can. The aches do still come but they don't last like if I have been sitting or laying around doing nothing. I don't have the energy to do much else but I am a good little walker.

  • Hi Carol, hope your day is better today. The Pain from Taxel chemo started to ease around ten days after last chemo. I was taking Targin twice a day with the occasional Endone for breakthrough pain. Weaned that to Panadeine for a couple of weeks. I just found with the pain under control I was more able to do life. You don't have to be strong all the time but you might be surprised how much better you feel with out pain. Take care, Tracey??

  • Hi Carol,

i had TCH with the neulastin injection the next day.  Chemo was Thursday, injection Friday and by Sunday the aches would kick in, particularly in my hips. It was agony for days. I have a tens machine and I used that along with strong pain killers. It just goes with the territory I'm afraid. Hang in there. Karen xox

  • Hi Carol, I had the same issues like you... i'm on AC chemo and after doing the injection all my bones were very painful from top of shoulders right down to my hips, but i only took panadol and it lasted for about 7 days.

  • Thanks for your advice Tracey, can I ask then, for you once the treatment finished the pain went away?

There are so many drugs its all very overwhelming - but yes I'm with you and will take the pain killers, some days I wonder how I will get through it, am really struggling to come to terms with the effects of the chemo and what it's doing to my body, and the lack of control over whats going on.

I am sure I will wake up one morning feeling stronger, just not today.

    Cheers Carol

  • Hi Carol, unfortunately both the Neulasta and the Taxel chemo both cause bone pain. The neulasta pain starts a few days after injection and can last for a week, but I found the ongoing pain was from the Taxel, and ended up taking heavy pain killers till chemo was finished. Couple of days after last dose I started weaning the pain killers, took about a week to come off them. No one likes taking more drugs but if it gets you through and allows you to sleep at night, take what you need. Like you, my docs were "confused" about the pain, but dr Google lists so many women who have this pain with Docetaxel/Taxotere/paclitaxel, it's gotta be the cause. Hang in there, you'll get through this, Tracey??
