Any experience with Docetaxel?

Hi everyone,

It's been a while ... things have been very, very busy around here with little Sydney and my treatment.  I'm now 2/3 through THANK GOODNESS.  I recently (last round) changed drugs and I'm on Docetaxel for the last 3 rounds.  I'm finding it really, really tough.  I managed to get through my 3 rounds of FEC and whilst I'm glad the nausea is behind me, the lethargy and aches/pains from the Docetaxel are gruelling.  I'm on Panadol Osteo which helps, but it's the side effects which are the hardest.  Does anyone have any experience in dealing with the mouth ulcers and constipation?  I'm doing the usual (rinsing with bicarb, taking slippery elm) but nothing is really having much of an impact.  It's been 6 days since my treatment, I'm hoping that within the next few days it'll ease up?

Any stories greatly appreciated :)

xx

  • Chrissy You are doing well with all your problems and still working. I am very grateful that I am not working, nor do I have young children to care for. My husband has been a rock to me all through this I could not have done this without him, god bless him. My side effects on Tamoxifen seem to have settled down I hope I don't put on weight, have just started daily workouts on an exercise bike my husband bought me. May or may not help, but the exercise will be good for me anyway. Take care X jill

  • I went into cardiac arrest with my first round of Docetaxel because I had forgetten to have my premeds the day before. I had 3 rounds of Doxcetaxel  with Herceptin and if I had to have more I was going to refuse and tell them to stick it where the sun dont shine. It nearly killed me. So glad that is in the past. I am only on Tamoxifen and putting on weight like a pregnant seal. I was 80 kl when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer Oct 2010. I am now 120+kg. My joints and back is so painful some days dragging this weight around. And I can't loose anything because of all the drugs I am on for other things like Thyroid cancer, Crohns Disease, Hyatus Hernea and Neuopathy after chemo (numb and aching feet). I am also anemic . All this while working full time.  I thank the God above that I dont have small children to deal with as well.

    So yeah....Life is Good!!!

Enough about me...how is everyone else coping???

Love to hear from you all.

  • Hi Shirley Have you tried carb soda in warm water for your ulcers? Also, I used a clean soft toothbrush each cycle, to stop any cross contamination Hope you are feeling better by now X Jill
  • I had four rounds of this with herceptin, which finished in February, thank goodness. The first round I ended up in hospital a week later( which was Boxing Day) because I had no white cells left at all. Released after four days attached to an IV machine and only my husband allowed to visit. The next round, I was told I would have a jab the following day, to help protect those precious white cells. In the meantime I had a reaction to the chemo and came out in a rash on my face, arms, neck and palms of my hands. So I was treated for that as well as the white cell jab, and sent home with phenergan for the rah and endone for the pain from the jab. Do it went on, each time I had it, my reactions got more pronounced, the scariest was blood from my bowel!!! My oncologist even told me I could stop it after that happened and go on with the herceptin only. Silly me said NO I have got this far I will have the last dose!!! Since then, feeling a lot better. Hang in there, it is horrible, but so is the thought that the cancer will come back. Docetaxel is so awful I don't think anything would survive easily. Good luck my thoughts are with you on your journey X Jill
  • I'm going for my first Docetaxel today after 3xfec.  Feeling quite nervous and afraid as I had hardly any side effects from the FEC ither than weight gain, Hair loss, fatigue and feeling "toxic" and stomach discomfort.  Oh and the worst mood swings I've ever known.  I have also had the nelasta injection after every round and I believe that has helped tremendously. I'm surprised its not given to everyone!

Anyway I hope you ladies are hanging in there,  I have my brave girl panties on tight today!  xx

  • HI Cass and Wendy, I have just finished 3 rounds of FEC, I am about to start the Docetaxel and am feeling afraid. I have suffered some bad side effects of which one is the mouth ulcers. I have found that applying Bonjela onto the mouth ulcers relieves the pain and I am also have just started using biotene Oral balance which is a dry mouth moisturising gel. It helps a lot. Ive got my pandaol osteo lined up and ready for the next phase. I have also been on the Neulasta injection for the last 2 FEC as ended up in hospital for five days after the first chemo as got an infection. Other side effects I have had are sores on head, complete hair loss, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, aches and pains from the neulasta and generally fatique, weakness and tiredness. I dont eat much in the first week but that does not worry me as nothing has any taste. Thanks for listening.

  • Thanks so much ... I'm definitely going for reflexology.  I've heard that sometimes the first round of Doc is the worst so I'm kinda praying that my next 2 rounds are a bit easier.

Thanks again ladies ... good luck to all of us in our battle.
