Hi everyone, it has been a while since I have posted. Finished radium mid-January, only a few days before I was due to go back work from my holidays (what a way to spend the holidays). I was lucky as I had a product called Nepatil. It is a new product where it is like sticky gladwrap. What a wonderful invention, I had minimal discomfort as the Nepatil stopped the burning and most of the irritation. The only downside it is a little irritation in the heat, quick showers & no swimming for the 8 weeks it is on but compared to not having it that was nothing to put up with. If it started to peel or get a bubble I would visit the nurses before Radium and they would patch it. A lot of hospitals are not using it as it is very expensive; I was one of the lucky ones to be able to have it. Saw my surgeon last week for a check-up. I have a large mass where I have my Lumpectomy; the surgeon said we will go with inflammation from Radium at this stage as it is early. He didn’t sound convincing and I am worried that it is something else. Not having mammogram until July. My breast is very sore on the side near my armpit, (the tumour was in the opposite side of the breast), today it was sore and when I touch it I had a hot sensation in that area. Has anyone else had these side effects? I know that I am probably over reacting but at the moment I am struggling with working full time and total exhaustion.

Cyber hugs to everyone.

  • Hi Leanne, congrats on finishing Radiation. You must be tired going straight back to work, but it still feels good to be finished active treatment. The last week of my radiation I found a huge lump in same breast as lumpectomy. Ultrasound showed no cancer, thank God, but inflammation and oedema from the radiation. Soreness under my armpit was a seroma that I didn't know I had. Now a month later it is all slowly improving. I figure the node they removed in my surgery would have drained this area and now cant, maybe that explains what the doc calls a pocket of "lymphoedema". Does that make sense? Like you I have follow up mammo and ultrasound in June for yearly checkup, but the docs aren't concerned about this new lump. Hang in there, I know its freaky so soon after treatment. Perhaps ask your treating team for an earlier ultrasound to put your mind at ease. Take care, Tracey

  • Keep an eye on your temperature, I ended up with mastitis/cellulitis in the breast after 9 radiotherapy sessions. Similar symptoms at the time. No further problems, & finished radiotherapy five weeks ago. My breast still gets hot, and pains in different areas at times.

    Take care, Lyn
