... is this normal ??

Hello everybody,

I'm a silent reader since July 2015 when my BC-Journey started.

I'm Michaela, 42 years old (young), mum of 3 beautiful daughters and wife of the best husband you can imagine. We are originally from Germany. Lived 4.5 years in WA and moved to lovely QLD end of last year.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer end of July 2015, had a mastectomy end of August and started Chemo in October.
The first 3 rounds of FEC were not really funny but I could cope pretty good with it.
Last Friday I had my first (of three) round of Docetaxel.
I have the feeling this chemo is eating my body from the inside.
Are there any tipps how I could manage this side effects better ?

Wish you all a lovely day

Michaela

  • Hi Linda,
    thank you for your message.
I was so lucky that I didn't feel the nausea, but I didn't expect all this other side effects.
Drinking water is a good advice - I'm a very bad water drinker - especially when I'm feeling not so good and also will keep in mind to move more. I was lying on the couch for 3 days, but it didn't really help.
Today I feel a little better and yes, I'm lucky to know I only have to go 2 more rounds.

    Thank you so much.

  • Hi Ann-Marie,
    Thank you for your message.

I will definitely have a read of the other posts.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Pam and Maryrose
    thank you for your messages.
It's good to hear, that the first dose is obvious the worst. And the 'run over by a truck' is exactly how I felt yesterday.
Today is a bit better and I think there is really light at the end of the tunnel.
I have a lot of side effects:
dry mouth, sore throat, belly cramps, bone pain, diarrhea, fatigue, sleepless, no energy, ...
    That's so not me.

  • Hey Michaela

I had same treatment as you. FEC was much better tolerated by me also. After each taxo treatment about day 5 i felt like i had been run over by a truck. I found that i felt a little worse with each one. Very weak and nausea to the point i had to stay in bed for the day.

Hope things improve for you remember we have been where you are now and there is a light at the end of the taxo tunnel so hang in there.????

  • Hi michaela,

i had 4 doses of docetaxel and then two of AC. Yes, it's bloody awful, but I found that if I felt a bit nauseas to eat something. Doesn't have to be much and the best thing for me was homemade pumpkin soup because I could actually taste it. Also try to move around a little. I never stayed in bed. Always showered and got dressed. The first dose was the worst as the mixture wasn't right and it gave me stomach cramps and diahorrea. They altered the amount after that which was better. You need to tell your oncologist of any side effects. Drink water as much as you can, even if it means sipping, but little and often. Unfortunately for me, and it's a rare side affect (happens to only 1% of people) the docetaxel affected my lungs. I am on steroids to help with that and am hoping to get weaned off them soon.

as they say, take one day at a time. Don't look too far ahead. You will get through it. I was lucky in that a good friend of mine had had exactly the same treatment and could give me tips on what to do. I thought to myself that so many people have had this treatment and come out the other side, then I must be able to do it too.

best of luck. Let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Michaela  Excellent sum up of the wonderful Docetaxel!! I had 4 rounds of AC then 4 of Dox/Hercepton.  And the AC wasn't nice but the dox is horrendous.  Think you need to ask about specific side effects and you will get some wonderful answers.  I can say that the 1st dose (long one for me) was definitely the worst.  Thinking of you
