Feeling alone and overwhelmed

Only 1 week into actual diagnosis and every morning at about 1-2am I wake up with panic and just cry

I’m so tired from this new sleep cycle 😩

The middle of the night brings overwhelming fear of the whole journey ahead. I’m an overthinker which doesn’t help.

  • Hi Ann58 . So sorry you are suffering from the horrid waking fears. I support Sheila's comments but it is still awful waiting, waiting, waiting for results, treatments, appointments and all the while not being able to see what's going on inside you or not knowing what the outcomes will be. Definitely discuss your fears and lack of sleep with your treating professionals. Call on any supportive friends to help you through this worrying period. I found keeping occupied, walking the dog daily, playing relaxing music, tai chi all helped me through the tough times. Good luck!

  • Hi Ann58, as an overthinker like yourself, I also found very difficult to sleep after receiving my diagnosis. What I found useful and do it until this day (just finished 4 x rounds of AC chemo)is having calming music playing in the background from the time I go to bed until the morning.

I know it is very tempting (guilty!) to get your phone out and start scrolling but try to concentrate on the tunes and take several deep breaths. If you have an eye mask, spray with any herbal scent such as lavender - the weight helps keeping your eyes shut and the scent is comforting.

I still wake up at night but it takes me less time to go back to sleep. I have discussed with my Oncologist other options down the track now that I have completed my chemo. Sleep plays a huge part on the recovery journey and you're not alone so discuss your options as you go along.

    Good luck with everything x

Hi Ann58, those first few weeks after diagnosis can be such an emotional rollercoaster, and a lot of people say the nights are the hardest. Be kind to yourself, you're still taking in a lot and it's completely understandable to feel overwhelmed.

While you're waiting for others to share their experiences and tips, you might find this article helpful: www.bcna.org.au/resources/emotional-wellbeing/anxiety-and-fear/

And if the anxiety and interrupted sleep keep going, it could be worth having a chat with your GP about some extra support. You're definitely not alone in feeling this way.
