Tamoxifen and fuild retention

Hi this is my first post
I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer in June 2017, it was small and it did not spread to the lymyh nodes, my treatment was a Lumpectomy 16 doses of radiation and I am taking Tamoxifen for the next five years or ten years I experienced joint pain and fuild retention in my feet is this normal?
over the past 6 months 1 of my close friends I use term loosely has not seen me at all not given me any support  in the long run she will lose out I had and still having fantastic support from friends and family
The only concern I have is the cancer will came back
Best wishes to all the cancer survivors

  • I too find that if I am mobile joint pain improves - I walk daily , attend  a gentle stretch and balance class twice weekly as well as Encore a free hydrotherapy class provided by the YWCA available in a few states .I find if I sit around too much joint pain is much worse but activity seems to allow me to move past it ie it goes away after a while in an exercise session.I have had back , ankle and knee pain.I also have fluid retention in my lower legs which the daily walk helps considerably - I am on an aromatise inhibitor called Letrozole.Exercise has not come easily to me and some days is not easy to get going but it really does make a difference to me including how I am feeling about life.Oddly I have found after a while it’s part of my day I am keen to do - exercise  seems to be somewhat addictive esp walking. PS I walk listening to music on my phone  -
is agreat distraction from the task at hand as silence is not golden for me plus have just bought an armband for the phone on eBay so a lot easier with hands free
  • I had terrible hip pain @Milly21 but it was more ligament pain and really bad when bending forward. It has improved now I am sitting much less and back at the gym. It was agony bending forward.

I had ankle and wrist pain when first started on aramatose inhibitor. Very stiff when still for a time. Once mobile it improves. I have it a little now but it has vastly improved.

  • Hi @Milly21, my knee pain is just a full on aching in the knee joint itself. Doesn't matter what way I turn there is no relief, and will wake me up from sleep. I take panadol osteo and there are nights that it doesn't help at all. But have found that the bolster I use does help. Xx
  • How would people describe joint pain?is is aching or like pulled muscle pain?do other people get it in hips?
  • Oooh @primek, I'm now following you!!! STALKER BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
  • Omg I can't believe it, there is a side effect of fluid retention I haven't got. Touch wood I don't get it as I seem to have just about every other one lol. I think I am almost finished menopause now and my hot flushes although I still get them every half hour or so, aren't as intense as they were. Looking forward to a much nicer 2018.
  • Hi @Stork, Welcome to the forum!!! People are funny buggers, and it does hurt when they turn their backs. As for Tamoxifen and fluid retention I've certainly gained weight and have just rejoined weight watchers yesterday to try and lose this. As for joint pain yes got that and have found my knees are the worst, I put a bolster cushion under them of a night when they're really bad and it makes a huge difference. My feet haven't swollen with fluid I just get pain in my left foot in the ball of the foot and have tried changing my work boots, runners, any other shoes that I wear and so far haven't hit on the magic formula to stop that particular ache. See if others here have any suggestions and/or ring the Bcna nurses 1800 500 258, cancer council 131120, speak to your breast care nurse, oncologist as someone should be able to advise. Big hug xx Cath
  • Hi and welcome.

It's sadly quite common to find out some friends aren't at all supportive and yet other people become a tremendous support. It hurts. People think of bc as a bit of a pimple these days (if they have nobody close to them who has experienced it) I think the exposure and good survival rates make people think it's  no more than that...rather than a genuine threat on your life. Only you can decide if this person is important to keep in your life. Many have decided to cut them loose...and focus on the people who really matter. Kath x.
  • Hi @Stork, welcome. The joint pain is common with tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors like Letrozole and Arimidex. Not everyone gets joint pain but there are a lot of women who do. I believe fluid retention can be a side effect also but not for everyone.  :)
