Re eyesight, Femara (Letrozole) effects on eyes

Has anyone else had a bleed in the eye socket whilst on Femara?

  • Not certain that it is a side effect however when my Mum was going through treatment she ended up having surgery at the Eye and Ear Hospital as a result of a burst blood vessel which was attributed to medication.  Dr Google suggests it is a possibility but...…….

Goodness knows but I will discuss with Michael next month
  • I know  tamoxifen can had eye issues but hadn't heard of femera. Sometimes these things can just happen even without medication I suppose. Hope things improve soon.
  • That's a bugger, @iserbrown.  SO glad that everything is OK!  I had something odd happen with one of my eyes earlier in the - but it was before I started AIs so not related.  A 'sort of' detached retina - but a gel sac that came away & then reattached itself!  I sort of had split vision!  I was really worried, as I'd hate to lose my sight!

All the best - I hope it all settles down well for you  xx

  • Glad you are OK! Anything with the eyes gives me a bit of a shudder. I realised I had a problem post op when they took the bandage off and I could see a wall of dark brown, nothing else! Back into surgery, they were very quick and very effective. Removed the blood, cauterised where the needle had pierced, all over in 10 minutes. Only problem was the gas introduced to assist the procedure - had something like a black jelly bean in my eye, gradually diminishing! Amazing. But thanks for the heads up - I was told that the odds of anything going wrong in my op was 1000 to 1. Great odds except if you are the 1. May be the same sort of odds with Femara, but no joy if you are on the wrong side. Best wishes.
  • Yes I am good!  No pain or blurred vision
Went to Optometrist who saw me straight away and did a pressure test on both eyes and photographed both front and back of the eyes to determine the cornea isn't affected.  It is a burst blood vessel and has a probability of being as a result of medication, will check with Onc next month.  It is not pretty to look at and will take a couple of weeks to heal and will turn yellow and black along the way apparently!
Oh the joys!  Tamoxifen gave me gynaecological problems now possibly Femara is not so friendly either!
  • Well yes, but it had nothing to do with Femara!! Mine was caused by a not so well placed anaesthetic needle during cataract surgery. I haven't heard of Femara causing an eye bleed. Vaginal bleeding is on the unlikely but possible list. Are you alright?
