Oophorectomy
Hi just out of interest, has anyone undergone oophorectomy or had to weigh up risks and benefits? I may require one either as an alternative to hormone treatment (ER positive) or because my ovaries are dodgy anyway. I know one should never google, but I have read stuff about it that is a little troubling. What's the good news? And I'm pre-menopausal - how does this affect women thrown into instant menopause? Any good news stories? Sex life, dare I ask?

- GreengirlMemberThat sounds positive @eightdays.Im going very good thanks. Having a lovely long weekend down the coast for my older sisters 50th. Making the absolute most of still feeling fit and well . Take Care x
- eightdaysMemberhi @Greengirl, thanks for checking in! Thursday was positive - the sonographer was quite open and said they did look very much like benign cysts so that’s encouraging. Will wait till later this week for more definitive results and a game plan. How are you feeling about things?
- GreengirlMember@eightdays how did you go on Thursday ? I presume you still have to wait until next week to get results? Everything crossed for you x
- GreengirlMember@eightdays I’ll definitely stay in touch. Back at work, go you good thing. I’m still bludging lol. Was originally having Thursday and Friday off anyway. Sounds like you have great friends. Wonderful. Goodluck for Thursday and let us know how you get on x
- eightdaysMemberHi @Greengirl, thanks for your message. It sounds like our tumour pathologies are similar as well as timing of events! Go us! Not! Good that you might be able to avoid chemo. I still don’t know yet about whether I get to avoid that, and not any clearer on the ovaries - having a scan on Thursday. Congrats on having your children all fully grown!! It sounds like you can get some headspace to focus on you (which I too, have had some time for as my friends have taken my children for play dates etc). I’m back at work today but it has actually been good to return and focus on something else. Best wishes with your results. Keep in touch, would love to help support you through this shit storm! Xx
- GreengirlMember@"eight days" sorry hadn’t finished that post before sending oops . I’m interested in the your post re- oophorectomy as I’m 47 and peri- menopausal with a hormone driven bc. Grade 2 no lymph node involvement. 15mm .I will get more thorough results on 31st Jan but my surgeon rang me briefly yesterday . Said I would likely need radiotherapy and probably not chemo she is going to check with someone.Anyway I’m following with interest and I think you are very normal to be feeling flat. Your kids are young. My youngest of 3 just turned 18 so that takes the pressure off to a certain degree for me . You also have a big job. My husband is the one with the big job and we could cope if I unable to work . So less pressure for me also in that regard . Second time = more pressure Anyway what I’m saying is that everyone’s circumstances are different and your feeling appear perfectly valid . Take care of yourself and I too get depressed about the state of the world 🌎😢 Thanks for sharing x
- GreengirlMember@eight days . I read your previous. That sucks and I’m sorry. I had lumpectomy last week also and I hope you don’t need to go back again 🤞
- eightdaysMemberHi @jintie, thanks for your post. I am sure you are making the right decision for you based on your experience with bc. It is helpful to read about other’s stories. Thanks for sharing it. I hope it all goes smoothly and you have a seamless recovery. All the best x
- jintieMemberI’m having my surgery on the 10th Feb to remove my ovaries and Fallopian tubes. I’m 42 and my cancer was hormone positive. I have chosen to go down this pathway as my mother was diagnosed before Christmas and whilst my grandmother did not have BC, her mother did - in both boobs. My surgery will be keyhole - in in the morning, home in the afternoon. In addition to reducing my risk, I didn’t want to have to deal with monthly injections for the next 5-10 years.
i already have osteoporosis and I’m already on the menopausal journey so I don’t think my side effects will get any worse. I just hope I’m making the right decision. - Anne65Member@eightdays I had an oophorectomy soon after I recovered from my rad treatment in March 2018. I wasnt on any medication then & am not now. i was already menopausal & "enjoying" all the lovely symptoms that went with it & it didnt change after the operation. The op was keyhole surgery with 1 night in hospital so very easy to recover from. I had the op to lessen my risk of getting ovarian cancer as a secondary, due to the fact that my mum died of the disease when she was 46y.o. My gyny onc & medical team all agreed that it was a no -brainer for me, considering my family history & that I didnt need them anymore! To have that risk taken away from me now is a huge weight lifted & I have no regrets at all. I do now have to monitor my bone density so i take Vit D & calcium & I also keep check on my heart. I love exercising & also do strength training at home with simple hand weights. You're right, you do have to weigh up everything that is important to your situation as every benefit can come with a negative. You just have to find out which is more important to you. Good luck xx
