Hot Flushes

Hi All,I finished chemo 12 weeks ago, and I started Tamoxifen nearly 2 weeks ago, but the hot flushes are killing me!!  Not bad for a 36 year old.  I get a hot flush nearly every hour.  I feel like I am standing a metre away from the sun most of the time.  Besides making sure I wear layers I can strip off at a moments notice, does anyone have any tips??  I was driving to work the other day with the window down, and it was 10 degrees!! Thank god it is Winter!!!!  Lydia xx

  • Good for you Lydia, it's the little wins that can make a big difference. Xxxlouie
  • Thanks Kim.  I thought once I finished chemo and radiation that should be all! Little did I know!  I will persist a little longer.  I'm hoping they will even out over the next month or so??  Fingers crossed. However thanks for the tip.

  • I keep lemonade icey poles in the freezer for summer.I carry a bottle of cold water everywhere I go and a hand fan in my handbag.I also keep hand fans all over the house.I layer my clothes.I also take a very low dose antidepressant called Endep(10mgs)and that helps, particularly at night. It doesn't seem to give me any side effects.Hot flushes are the pits and Tamoxifen cranks them up. Talk to your doctor and don't just suffer them.Good luck.

  • Hi All,

Thanks for the tips.  I will try cutting out caffeine.  I'm just starting to get back into exercising, due to hand and foot problems from the chemo.  I will also, check out Evening Primrose Oil, i currently take Cod Liver Oil.  I wondering if this would do the same?

  • Hi Lydia, I have finished Taxol nearly four weeks ago and I'm still getting them. At the moment I am trying Evening Primrose Oil, the Radiation Oncologist recommended it. Cheryle :)

  • Hey LydiaIf you put hot flushes into the search box up the top of the page it will come up with a lot of different posts relating to hot flushes and I am sure there will be some hints there for you.  My doctor from womens Health has put me on Lyrica or Pregabalin 150mg for pain and hot flushes and it is keeping my hot flushes under control at the moment.  Hope that helps, all the best with your research and getting some answers, Mich xoxoxo
  • I understand completely. I have found caffeine and red wine increase flushes. The red wine pretty much immediate and the caffeine causes flushes all night. So I cut them out or at least know the consequences of indulging. I also find the more I exercise the fewer flushes and decreased intensity. I am not on tamoxifen (yet), putting it off as long as possible. Your flushes sound pretty intense, I hope things improve for you. Louie
