Aromatase inhibitors
I’ve started reading about this treatment as it has been recommended for me . One article firmly stated chocolate , alcohol and coffee were not recommended. Is that what you all understand?? I mean that seems quite drastic if it’s for ten years 😳
Do you think say a wine once a week would be ok? And I just love my one fresh brewed coffee in the morning. What are you doing if you are on this treatment ? I’d really love to hear your advice . Xx

- kmakmMember@kmcin28 It will be interesting. You'll have to let us know!
- kmcin28MemberI am on leterazole and had a hysterectomy many years ago, On my pathology results at diagnosis it states estrogen 95% of cells positive progesterone 1%. I was started on the AI when I finished chemo even though I am still having Hercepton every 3 weeks. I was surprised at the high reading considering my age. It will be interesting when I'm finished, one treatment to go, what drug I can blame for my aches and pains. I'm only slightly overweight and my job that I had to retire from was very physical so I did get plenty of exercise. Probably need to get back into it now, unfortunately where I live do not have the Encore or Exmed programs.
- arpieMemberThe cat is a MUST! ;)
- GlemmisMemberI am in UK at the moment and saw my oncologist & surgeon recently & neither said anything about Letrozole & risk of DVT either. I try not to worry about all the things that could go wrong as you would never do anything.
- kmakmMemberI haven't been told about a DVT risk either. I'll have to ask my oncologist as I've got a longish flight at thecend of the year.
- AfraserMemberI do get some side effects from letrozole, but no flushes and no aches and pains. I've never been told about a DVT risk, and I have taken a lot of long flights in recent years, but then again I take blood thinners so that's less likely anyway! There has to be one benefit!!
- kmakmMember@Marakesh You might have to keep an eye on the cheese intake due to the cholesterol raising nature of AIs.
I've dramatically cut back on the booze. What with it being a carcinogen and all... I have it once a week now. Sometimes twice. The latest research says the best amount to drink is zero!
I've cut back on the coffee, and when I do have it, sadly it's with low fat milk because of the AI cholesterol issue. The dietician at the BCNA Plan B said a skinny latte counted as one of the four serves of calcium a day we needed as post-menopausal women, so that's fine by me!
Chocolate is my kryptonite... Every day I struggle to resist the temptation to eat it. It's just soooo good. :p - kmcin28Member@Marakesh I hadn't heard that about the flying. I am going overseas next year all being well. I see my BS in a month I will ask him then.
- MarakeshMemberHi @arpie
I haven’t been told which AI yet . I’m wondering if I do get given a choice choice then I could try one that is known for less side effects . I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for one that won’t push my weight up . I don’t think increased blood pressure would effect me too much as mine is usually on the low side. Cholesterol increase may not be an issue and I didn’t suffer much from hot flushes the first time round so Hope it wont be a biggie this time either.
PS: lunch at yours sounds yum! 😜 - arpieMemberI've been thru full menopause - started 20 years ago (early) and finished 10 years ago. I was on HRT cream for 6-8 months during that time, until it affected my boobs & I was sent to Newcastle for a more thorough check after 4 goes at Breastscreen! I stopped taking the cream the day I was called to John Hunter at Newcastle!
Which AI are you on? I started on Letrozole & am much happier on Exemestane! Virtually NO side effects at all!! :)
I had the odd flush on Letrozole (maybe 3 in 6 weeks) and none on Exemestane at this point (8 weeks in).
I have aged cheese & tomato every day on crackers for lunch with home made baked capsicum .... YUM!
All the best for your review!!
