Something to look forward to

Hi everyone, this is my first post, but always refer to your posts for advice etc. I was diagnosed in dec 2012, grade 3 triple neg, lumpectomy nodes and margins clear. Just had 2nd round of chemo (FEC), 4 to go then 5 weeks of radio. I will be finished by end of july, so to get me through this I want to plan a tropical holiday just me and my husband. Broome WA is my favourite place in the world and I have my heart set on it. Some people say no way because of the sun, what do you think? I could cover up with 50 plus and wear hats, sunshirts etc. Is it the whole body that is sensitive to the sun or just the boob effected? I do plan on consulting my onc but thought i'd see if anyone else has some advice. Thanks Rachel

  • Thanks Janet! Im thinking i will be fine if i dont be silly about it and will check with the doctor. Hope you are feeling well now lucky girl!
  • I finished 6 weeks of radiation in November 2012 (and chemo prior to that) and have just endured the hottest Melbourne summer I can ever remember. I have been swimming lots of times and got a light tan on my arms and legs and suffered no ill effects at all from a little bit of sun exposure.

I was told not expose that area that had radiation to the sun so I bought a rash vest that covered up a bit more of my chest than a bikini top does. And I have been careful to use sunscreen on my chest to and the top of my breast. And as I said, no problems at all.

I'm guessing you would be fine to go to Broome as long as you protect yourself from the sun. Check with you doctor of course as everyone's situation is unique. Hope you get to have your tropical holiday. I would so love to go there myself. Good luck, Janet.
