Who broke the machine?!

Hi Ladies
Yes! Who broke the machine you hear me ask!  Well let me start from the beginning.  We had a nice quiet weekend at home and this morning packed up the car and actually left right on our organised time - (so proud of ourselves).  Hubby drove just under the speed limit so as to 'conserve' fuel - Now here's the kicker! Our travel time to our desitnation is approximately one and 1/2 hours - 15 minutes before we were due to arrive at the hospital for my first dose of radiotherapy for the week, I get a phone call on my mobile phone - Guess what? The machine is broken! No radiotherapy today - or tomorrow and maybe not Wednesday because they only have one machine, its broke and the part has to be flown in from the Phillipines - and then fitted by a qualified engineer!  My hubby rolled his eyes as he got the gist of the conversation very quickly.....poor fellow and all that fuel conservation! Ha! So we turned the car around and drove all the way back home..................(no point in staying up there....boring as!)  So here I am back in my lovely little home and thinking "Oh, this is going to put my radiotherapy back a week........"  I don't know how long this will go on for, but no use swearing or having a hissy fit....I will let you know what the outcome is when I find out more, mean while its a case of hurry up and wait.  x x x Josie

  • hi josie,

sorry to hear you were nearly there, then got sms machine was not working. poor hubby and you. these things happen, but when did it break and could they have not sms'd earlier??

i guess they have many people to do and can get a backlog also. first time for me all went well. second time around there were many waiting to have radiation and was harder to work around the times.

i hope it gets sorted for you . let us know how it goes.

    kathy.

  • Hi Josie,

So glad you could get in today. When people ring, for charity calls and telemarketers etc. they ask is that a suburb or Brisbane. I have to have a chuckle at that. I often thought when I went in for chemo, that I was glad that I didn't live further out west, as people from out there had to come in every 3 weeks. One lady who lived nearly the same distance as me from Rockhampton got more for travel assistance than me. Her hospital was in the town and mine was about an hour and 15 mins I think from us, but closer to Rockhampton, so I only got half the travel money. I was able to come home for a couple of weekends during radiation to Rockhampton, as we just bought a house at Gracemere to rent out. We had to fix it up before renting it out. Nothing like doing chemo, radiation etc. and fixing up a house my daughter said. I also flew up to Mackay for my daughters 21st while down in Brisbane.

You'll be looking back like me a year ago from now and think that went fast, but it doesn't at the time.

Take care and not long before you can go home for the weekend.

  • Hi Kay, Wow, I have no right to whinge about my travel! We left Queensland nearly two years ago and it is a very, very big state - I am really glad I didn't get sick up there as I would have had a lot further to travel.   Yes there is only one machine where I go, but I heard on the grape vine that they are going to take this one over to the Base hospital and that will make four - because they were worried about 'breakdowns'.  They rang me (I was home) today at 1.15 and asked could I make a 2 pm appointment (what the!?) Only if we could go by chopper (lol) any way they said they would book me for tomorrow morning, so here we are back at the accommodation and settled in.  I call Ballarat 'Grumpy Town' (don't have to think hard about that one!) any way I hope all goes well for you - Cheers and hugs Josie x

  • We're about 3 and a half hours away from where I got chemo and our biggest town, and they only found out about my blood tests the day before they ordered them. One time the truck that got the blood had something go wrong and we nearly didn't find out results so that would have put my chemo back a bit further.  My daughter in law had to have an ultrasound for her baby and before we got there (which was 3 1/2 hours drive as well) they said the one who was doing it couldn't come in. We had to try and get in somewhere else as we didn't take any clothes down to stay overnight.

I was away in Brisbane doing radiation, for 6 weeks (25 treatments) (about 11 hours away from home), so when the machines were down for maintenace and there was long weekends, it made the stay quite a bit longer. Lucky I was able to stay at our daughters place with her husband and our grandsons. I wish I could live an hour and a half out of town like you.Sometimes they put me on another one. I was always about 6 hours or so travelling to and from the hospital on the transport they provided. One bus driver was near my daughters house, once on the day I really needed to be home as I wasn't coping well  that day, and he decided to take another lady home first, so I think I had another 3/4 of an hour before I got back home.

Do they only have one machine? Hopefully the machine is up and running soon for you so that treatment can be finished.

  • Smooth? Who me? Bloody joking aren't you Tonya (lol!) Yes those little fuel dockets do help (even if it is just a $1) luv Josie x x x

  • Hi Annie - Great to hear from you again, everything well and truly organised and packed away - major retail therapy on the furniture front! After radiation is over, we are going to get the garden started - hate leaving this place, want radio to be over! I am so happy with our little home, I can always find something to do, even if it is to just sit and stare at the wonder of it all! (lol) x x x Josie

  • You might be better off booking a flight to the Phillipines.Clearly all the parts are over there. Why doesn't life go smoothly for you Josie? You'll have to do alot more shopping at Coles to save those petrol dockets.
