Were your fingernails sore before they fell off?

Mine are starting to deteriorate and are becoming sore at the corners of the nails. I'm wondering if this is an early sign that they might go. Week 7 of taxol.

  • @PatsyN Thanks so much for that. I appreciate the detail. I guess it's different for everyone, but it's good to know of the different experiences.
  • @Flaneuse - mine went purple overnight with the first dose. Every time I cleaned them I saw a bit more white and less nail attached. I used a fine bristle bamboo toothbrush on my fingers and toes as they were too sore to clean with a nail file.
Bit by bit more white would appear and less nail attached.
I'd trim them so that they didn't get hooked on anything. I trimmed them down to almost nothing and then they just lifted off and there was another nail underneath starting to grow again.
They all grew back better than their original condition. It wasn't the losing of the nails that was painful but the nailbeds which the nails could make move. My toenails were more painful than my fingernails, I think because I had more accidents with them, it was easier to guard my fingers.
I go into a bit of detail because that is one of the things I was particularly curious about when I started my own dose dense AC then the Paclitaxel. The nail damage was done during AC.
  • @kmakm I'm SO looking forward to being able to go back to my podiatrist. F x
  • @Flaneuse Well it is for me. It's annoying but as side effects go, it's one of the lesser ones. We'll get a mani pedi together next year! K xox
  • My fingernails and toenails were very sore. I lost my one big toenail and another lifted on one side. I used to have blood collect under them. But mainly tender and brittle gir aroubd 12 months.
  • So the effect on nails goes on for long after chemo has finished ...  yuk.
  • Different chemo F but mine were all unbelievably sore, getting worse each round. They all lifted but none fell off. A nasty ridge for each infusion grew through afterwards. The early damage, marked by dirty brown crescents, has reached the top of my fingers and the nails are now splitting and breaking. I've had three toenails fall off. K xox
  • Hi, it could be. I am on Paclitaxel and my fingertips get sore the first couple of days after each chemo. My oncologist took a look and said that the nailbeds are affected which means they may eventually lift off. They look a bit like I've caught them in a door.
