Went to the Doctors Today

Hi all went to the doctors today to talk to him about what i should do weather to have the double mastectomy or just have the cancer removed and lymph nodes tested. He told me with the brca1 Gene that if he takes the cancer out and some lymph nodes to test that there is a chance that the cancer can come back in the same breast or the other breast as the cancer in my left breast is fast growing he says so I told him ok i will have a double mastectomy and reconstruction as i do not want to keep going in from having tests and getting told there is more cancer there in the future. So i am going to have the mastectomy and reconstruction on the 23rd of March. He says after the operation i will also need to have some chemo so hoping that i do not lose to much of my hair the breast care nurse says that they put a cap or something on your head and you do not lose alot of hair like people use to and what you do lose is not noticable so hopefully she is right. I will be in hospital 3 days and 2 nights if things go well with the operation but they said if i am sick they will keep me in longer.

  • Thankyou Tracy for the good wishes i am going to see if i can find anyone from the adelaide area soon. I love this forum and all the wonderful people on it they all have been so helpful and it is nice to know that i can talk to people that are going through the same thing as me

  • Just focus One thing at a time... I know this is hard to do when you know your entire plan.. Gather your strength to get through the surgery and heal... Like Brenda said you'll need to heal completely before they hit you with chemo... The caps your nurse talks about are called  'cold caps' ...

Have you searched this site for a group in your state?

Wishing you all the best for your surgery and recovery ... Be kind to yourself and listen to your body .... One day at time...

. Love and light for easy recovery and beautiful days....

  • Hi Rowdy

I live in Adelaide and i am going to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I am a bit scared but it will be good when it is finished. And I am doing alot of exercise and eating healthy before the op. I am hoping i can meet a few people that live in adelaide that have gone through the same thing as me.

  • Hi sometimes when you make the decision and a plan is set, you feel a bit more in control (little bit) I had a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction in 2014. Be kind to yourself and if you need pain killers take them and except any help offered. Good luck what hospital are you going to Sending you a hug xx

  • I am lucky as i have family that will help out my mum said she will come everyday to see if i need anything done around the house and cook me dinner she said so I think i will be well looked after.

  • Yes there is so many decisions but i think i picked the right one for me and i know it will be painful but it has to be painful first to be able to get better so. After the op i have to decide weather i am going to have a nipple and that reconstructed after as well but i have to think about getting this all done first

  • About three weeks I had to wait for my op too. Its not so much you are sick its that you are able to do things for yourself when you get home. Funny little things like towelling off your back ( I needed a lighter towel) and reaching the toilet paper off to one side. One hurdle at a time, don't worry about the chemo bit yet. You will need time to heal. xxx
