Well this sux!

On Monday 6th December 2010 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After what seemed like a million calls and messages from family and friends I saw a surgeon late Friday afternoon and was told I needed a mastectomy as I had 2 breast cancer lumps and a group of cancerous calcifications in my left breast. My husband wouldn't commit to a surgery date as HE needed more time to think about it all and process everything.

This weekend when I need to talk to someone and get advice, none of the organisations are open. It seems you can only have breast cancer Monday to Friday. Cancer takes weekends off!

I feel quite on my own at the moment. The surgeon had said I could have my operation late January and that that date would not alter my outcome. I cant look forward to Christmas with this hanging over my head. On Friday we were offered 23rd December as a date. I am so worried that when I call tomorrow that date wont be available still. What do I do then? The surgeon goes on holiday after the new year.

I dont know if anyone will respond to me, but I would be so grateful to hear from someone who has gone through all of this.

  • Hello SuziBee,i have just read your post and understand as i was given the lovely news on the 23/12/2008.I was not operated on until 6/1/2009 so i spent my christmas in a bit of a daze.Yes it was alittle scary but it also gave me time to collect my thoughts. You are never alone though it may seem that way at times.Though it is ourselfs that are experience this scary ordeal it is those around us that do not know what to do.You may find that your husband is a little frighten so his actions and words are not always going to be what you need or want to hear. There is a lot of support for yourself and also for your husband through the cancer council. Some times our partners and family just need to be reminded that this is the time we need them the most to help us to make these very hard decisions. There is also a Cancer Council Helpline that you can call.As hard as it is at the moment try and stay positive and ask as many questions as you feel you need to ask .I do hope that you do get operated on tomorrow (23/12/2010) and i wish you a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with SusiBee.We are a strong breed us female.I will leave you with a little quote that was amongst My Journey Kit "Yesterday's history, Tomorrow 's a mystery all we have is Today,It's called the Present because it's a Precious Gift".x

  • Hi there SuziBee .... I've been away from the blogs for a little while so have only just read your post.  It's been a week now .. has your husband realised that this is not about HIM and given you his total and unconditional support?

I hope this doesn't offend .... but I'm very passionate about this and tend to speak my mind.  My circumstances re the Xmas period were pretty much the same, had my mammogram, u/sound, needle biopsy etc during December 2009, the final test 3 days before Xmas.  I got my diagnosis on 13th of Jan 2010 , was offered lumpectomy or mastectomy  .... didn't think twice and took the latter.  I was on my own .... my partner was away working ... so made the decision without any discussion with  any one other than the surgeon.  When I told Terry what had happened I had his total support, without any reservations or debate.  My diagnosis was on 13th Jan (two days before my 62nd birthday) and the mastectomy was 28th Jan (one day after Terry's birthday) so it was happy January to us!!!!

Do you have your My Journey kit ... it is a wealth of information and includes a DVD that is really beneficial in giving the men in our lives a greater understanding of what is happening with your body and with both of your lives.

By now you will have made a decision re your operation, I sincerely hope you were able to get the 23/12 date offered .... not only because the waiting will be a downer over Xmas but more importantly for your own peace of mind.

As I said, I hope my comments haven't offended .... that was not my intention.  This journey you are embarking on is not one of choice and it is essential that you are sourrounded by unconditional love and support.

Please pop in here and chat any time, before, during and after treatment.  Share your fears, thoughts, and feelings with us .. there will always be someone here to listen and help.

    Stay strong and positive .....

    Cheers .... Shirl

  • Hi suzibee.  I want to welcome you to the online network and assure you that you can post whatever you need to here. Have a browse around and you will find others in a similar situation.  If you need a hand finding your way around, take a look at the help page, or just ask -- there's nearly always someone around who can answer. :)

  • Hi,

We had chemo hanging over our head last Christmas, after having a lumpectomy and then a mastectomy within a couple of weeks of each other in , November 2009 . We didn't really enjoy Christmas or the New Year, but had it with family so that was nice. It took our minds of things a bit.  I was diagnosed towards the end of October. There might be a support group in your area, if you ring the cancer council tomorrow. We were very numb, when I was diagnosed and needed time to process things. Hopefully the 23rd is still available for your op.  If not is there anyone else that can do it.
