Vitamins

Hi

I am due for surgery in 2 weeks and have been told to stop my vitamin intake. Could I please have some advice if I am able to continue with certain vitamins including immune boosters . Thanks Maree

  • Hi, the fish oil is a natural blood thinner, and I was told to stop them 10 days prior to surgery. I have just recently fallen and broken my arm in several places, and because I am on fish oil, I have really bled badly into the tissues around the fractures. The bruising is still bad and this happened 3 weeks ago. Things like Asprin can also thin your blood, so listen to your doctors. I also agree with Lorraine about the immune boosters and chemo. Depending on what they are, some will counteract what the chemo is trying to do, so when in doubt, always discuss first with your oncologist, and understand why he doesn't want you to take certain supplements. Love Chris xx
  • I had one of my operationg cancelled as I had had a bad cold and was trying to get rid of it with "natural tablets".  Turned out lots of these natural things affect your blood clotting. Echynacea, ginger, to name a few.  I know vit C is OK, but best to check with your surgeon.  All fish oils and Red Krill oil also need to be stopped for the same reason.

    Good luck

  • Hi Maree

During this difficult time it is usual to have many questions,  I found that the best thing was to listen to the advice of the experts and become well informed.  It is always useful to discuss any concerns (eg the taking of immune boosters) with your oncologist.  Remember no question is silly as if it is formed it is because you want to know.  So do not be afraid to ask.  All the best with your surgery be gentle with yourself and remember you are now a member of a club you may not have wished to join but nevertheless you are a member and as such are loved and supported.
