Unilateral mastectomy and now results

I am not sure that if the oncologist will talk to you about diet.  If you are in the public system you can ask to see a dietician and if not ask your GP if you be referred to a dietician.  You can have GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangement referral giving you 5 free visits to a dietician. 

I am going to be sorcing a dietician to help me boost my immune system once my oncologist says I can.  I haven't cut out dairy especially milk because I was already low in Vit D and I am concerned about my bones.  I think I have done the trick as I have lovely long fingernails which I have never been able to have before?  This is with having 3 FEC chemo and 2 x Docetaxel (one more to go this Thursday).

Great, thanks Joy. I have cut out gluten, wheat, dairy, red meat and sugar with the autoimmune disease and cancer hitting me just recently. I did have a few chocolate treats for Easter and now that I read your post I will go back on the no sugar diet. I intend to get organic fruit and vegetables. Does the oncologist actually speak to us about diet? Thanks againxxx

As I had chemo, I did not do anything too major while undergoing this. They recommend a balanced healthy diet during and after chemo. Things I have changed are no alcohol (as this is a risk factor for getting BC), more fresh vegetables and fruit, no processed foods and less meat. I buy organic to avoid the risk of pesticides and chemicals wherever possible.

Exercise is also very important. I walk, swim and do Pilates. These changes not only reduce my chance of getting a recurrence but I feel better and have a better quality of life. I figure something or more likely a combination of things resulted in me getting cancer so I have removed as many risk factors as I can. Can't do anything about being female and getting older! Hi again

The main thing I changed was to cut out all sugar where possible and I don't feel like alcohol at the moment.   This is my way of feeling like I have self discipline and control.  Other than that I am eating a balanced diet of protien, fruit and vegetables.  No take away food (only once for fish & chip since November).   We have never been big on take away or processed food and prepare everything ourselves including sauces etc.  So it wasn't a drastic change in diet for me.   Dropping the sugar and walking every day has really helped me to maintain healthy weight. 

Once the treatment is over my oncologist said I can look at introducing foods rich in antioxidants and doing things to boost my immune system etc.  She doesn't want me experimenting at the moment though so I will heed her word and keep doing what I am doing now.

Thanks Robyn, I like your tips on the lead up prep-rest, diet and exercise- and I need to put my faith in the oncologist. I will have to stop reacing ahead of myself in my head:) Did you change your diet much? Maryxxx

Glad to hear that you are recovering well from you surgery and are remaining strong while waiting for your pathology results.  The waiting is the worst part but once you have your treatment plan you will feel better. 

I agree with Deanne and Robyn in looking after yourself from here on hend:  Rest, walk and eat well for good recovery from all treatments.
