The Cosmic Clowns are at it again.

Well pluck a duck...my latest joy is that I was told yesterday that I have, as she put it, baby, almost toddler cataracts forming in both eyes. Probable due to two of the other autoimmune conditions I have, as well as age...all sixty years of it. Well, last night had me tossing and turning, as always, but my mind now had something new to chase after. Hmmm...lets say I go totally blind and they can't fix it, how the you-know-what- do I get around with Sam (my four wheeled granny walker). As many of you know, my neuropathy and lack of balance make Sam a necessity. If I fall, I'm fucked. Something will break (thanks osteoporosis). So what would I do. Paint him white and attach a notice to the front "Blind Walker". Or do I get a white stick and attach it to the front with a small motor which makes it sweep left and right before the front wheels. Or do I get a guide dog, and sit it on the seat. One bark means go left, two means go right, and three means stop. More barks mean "Get the fuck out of the way" to some other promenading fool, whose standing there rooted to the spot and staring? But seriously, I was told that merely waiting for them both to form and then remove and replace lenses with clear ones, might not work in my case. One of the conditions affects all my connective tissue, body wide, and has caused all the tiny blood vessels to harden closed. Hence the kidney disease, severe circulation problems in hands and lower legs as well as a shitload of other assorted body parts. The other condition has resulted in scarring of the retina due to my lack of natural lubrication to the eyes. Let's hope they can be fixed. Has anybody else had cataracts, and if so, can you tell me how bad my vision will become before an attempt can be made to remove them and replace the lenses? Sorry for the long post, but sighhh, that is my way.
  • @Sister...Probably gave them the finger one time too many. I really wish they'd give me a break and take up stamp collecting or somesuch.....sheesh...
  • Shit, @AllyJay -  what did you do in your last life that they're ganging up on you?
  • Sorry @AllyJay that's such a pain, hope it gets sorted without to much chaos!
Had my eyes checked about 6 weeks ago only slight change , but he said I have the beginnings of cataracts . Also a yearly check will be ok , but i'll check with my GPnext time i'm there .
  • Really? Fuck the clowns and the asteroid they rode in on. It's all well and good to be a tough old Broad, but must the constant testing go on and on?
  • I am dreadfully sorry that the bloody cosmic clowns have seen fit to torture you more. I sincerely wish I could help in some way, and wish you the luck you need to make it all go smoother and easier than expected. You are such a kind and giving person. It's not fair you have to be so brave. The biggest of hugs, K xox
  • A vitrectomy may help remove the detritus, @AllyJay but I think all this will become clearer when you have your specialist appointment. I can fully understand how worrying it all is, but it's remarkable what can be done. I confess I put mine off - first diagnosed with incipient cataracts about two years after bc diagnosis, when I was feeling well and in control of things, so not at all keen for another bout of surgery. I also have peripheral neuropathy, not as severely as you, and was worried about balance (the one eye fixed, one not period was potentially tricky for someone as short sighted as me), but it was all quite manageable. I hope you have a good resolution to the difficulties.
  • Thanks for the info @Afraser... I have to see someone at Royal North Shore about this, but it was explained to me that what is straightforward for most, won't be so simple for me. My eyes are similar to those of a diabetic, in so far as they have a very reduced blood flow and thus post surgery repair would be compromised. Also because of these missing small blood vessels within the eye itself, the natural cleaning of the vitreous humor doesn't happen, and instead of dead or old bits and pieces being drained from the eye on into the general blood circulation for removal, these bits (drusen) stay and build up within the eyes. Then there's the scarring and whatever else, which complicates matters. I'm just so tired of this one thing after the other FFS.
  • My mum had hers done years ago with great success and only needs to use the $2 magnifying glasses you can get most places. From what i understand things have changed a bit since mum's were done as her friend had her cataracts removed recently. There is no bandage after the op and not as many eye drops. From memory when mum's eyesight was failing due to this she said it was like seeing rainbow colours at the edge of here eyesight, worse at night time. I hope your op is successful and that you won't have to resort to barking!
  • Yep, both eyes, fixed, can see now without glasses for the first time since I was seven (now 73). Had them done last year. Assuming there are no other complications ( ie you have normal cataracts) it's a common and normally pretty routine operation. Sorry I don't know if the scarring on the retina can be fixed, your eye specialist will be able to advise about that. The actual cataract operation took about 15 minutes, I was awake but sedated and chatted to the surgeon throughout. Believe me, I like someone tinkering about with my eyes as much as the next person but it was fine! The new lenses can be made to correct any visual impairments (you can discuss options) so hey presto I am no longer short sighted (for all practical purposes). It used to be the case that surgeons liked to wait till the cataracts were well formed before operating but that's no longer the case - you will need to discuss that with your surgeon but it may well be very negotiable. I had a slight issue with my second eye (fixed immediately and highly unlikely to happen) but otherwise my eyes were 'fixed' when the bandage came off the next day (they will do one at a time!) - eye drops (quite a lot at first) decreasing over 4 weeks. 12 months on no issues at all. Best wishes.
  • Oh @allyjay don't say sorry for long  post you're mulling it over!
No I haven't had cataracts! Both my parents have had them fixed and their glasses strength diminished .
Note to self, not that I know how they form, not to get cataracts

    Take care
