Taxol and carboplatin

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone has been on this regime? I am not braca positive but triple negative and my nurse has said new research shows the carbo is good for treating triple negative.

Also wondering how people tolerated this regime?

Thanks in advance x
  • I've geard of ACT or TAC for TNBC. I guess it would be less toxic without the A.
  • I had the Taxol/Carboplatin regime back in 2012 when platinum drugs were still cutting edge for tnbc.  Now they are using them in the US due to really good results.  I didn't have many side effects due to the pre and post meds given each week.  At the end of 12 weeks dizziness set in and treatment was stopped.  That was 4.5 years ago and all is well. My MO trained in Germany and the US and heads a cancer/haematology clinic. Hope this helps a bit.  Good luck!  Michelle x
  • I was meant to have taxol and carboplatin for cycles 5-8 but as I had previous issues with nerve damage they used taxotere and carboplatin to reduce risk of peripheral neuropathy.  I had an extremely bad reaction to that combo and extreme peripheral neuropathy (I have another complicating disability that also causes some nerve issues) and we discussed not continuing at all but instead for cycles 6-8 I had carboplatin on it's own.  so make sure that you discuss any side effects with your treatment team because there is always other options.   Because of issues with neutropenia I also had neulasta with each cycle, that gave me bone pain for a couple of days but having a claratyne helped.  not pleasant at the time but very doable and was much better than I had expected.  Nuelasta caused bone pain but was only for 3 days and it really helped keep my bloods good and I didn't get neuotropenic at all - didn't even get a cold while doing chemo.
  • I had  3 rounds of taxal/ carboplatin following three rounds of FEC. I tolerated it better than FEC in terms of nausea and migraines, but developed skin rashes and some finger and toe neuropathy. The hair I lost during FEC started growing back. fatigue and tirednes increased, but this was probably the cumulative effects of months of chemotherapy rather than this particular combination of drugs. I was also given neulasta, and this helped keep me well - no colds or infections and pretty good blood counts throughtout.
  • Thanks @Jz they haven't given me neulasta but they did give it to me on AC. Good to know you tolerated it ok. So far so good but just worried about my levels without the injection. Will find out tomorrow. Thanks again
  • Hi ccasper, I hope this finds you well and your first round of this combo is tolerable. I've been on this regime for a few months, only 3 more to go then I'm done with chemo.
Mine is not docetaxel tho, I'm on paclitaxel weekly then every third week bung in the carboplatin as well. I've been ok until the last couple of weeks when I've ended up in hospital dehydrated and anaemic as my liver and kidneys are taking a beating. I was told that this regime would be more tolerable and less harsh than the alternative, which was docetaxel alone. I have a great relationship with my oncologist and her registrars, which has helped enormously. I've done so well that I only stopped working full-time about 6 weeks ago, but have been pretty rough since, as I said.
I'm keeping my eye on the prize, which is to finish my entire chemo plan - even if I crawl across the line I want to give it my best shot.
I should mention I have numb, tingly toes and the feeling of sandy feet constantly. that's what peripheral  neuropathy feels like to me. My fingers are ok. My feet are ok, it doesn't stop me doing anything, but sometimes heavy covers on my feet at night bother me. Otherwise I ignore it and push on. We're still hopeful it will rectify once chemo is finished.

Just wanted to share my experience so far with you. I was very anxious at the start of this, with good reason of course, but I've found that my will is stronger than anything else that's happened since! When I'm good, I make the most of it. When I'm not, I slow down and listen carefully to my body and ask for help. It's worked for me so far.

    All the best! xo
