Tamoxifen changes to the endometrium

Hi Everyone, I have been taking Tamoxifen for just over 5 years now, I experienced some spotting early December 2016 after not having periods since 2011 during chemotherapy. My GP had arranged for me to see a OB/Gyn, whom I saw this week. I had a transvaginal scan and it showed that my endometrium was thickened and cystic consistent with Tamoxifen use. Next step is to have a hysteroscope take a closer look. Even though the chance of having endometrial cancer is small, it is still a possibility. I am wondering how many of you have had a similar outcome on Tamoxifen?

  • Hi Adean, I am having prolapse as well, not that I knew I needed one. Oh!  I am going  for pre-op on Thursday and will find out how long I need off work.
  • Me to l had a hysterectomy and ovaries and prolapse done l was surpised how much it took out of me l was so glad l took 8 weeks of work it knocked me for 6.
  • Hi Kathie, I have d been taking Tamoxifen for almost 4 years, I had some bleeding, my GP sent  me to a Gyno, this all happened within two days. He did a transvaginal ultrasound and a polyp was found.
Plans were then made to have a hysteroscope and resection.  Pathology came back polyp not cancerous (larger than first thought) but I have Simple and Complex Hyperplasia (at this point don:t know if it is Typical or Atypical which has a greater impact.
As I am ER+ and PR+ (95 -100%) I cannot have Progesterone which can be given to reverse this, My Gyno said "If you were my wife you would be having a Hysterectomy" that was good enough for me, I had already decided that I could not continue to live like this, continually worried about what might be happening in my body. He said having a hysterectomy would be the same treatment for Simple and Complex Atypical Hyperplasia.
So in less than two weeks I am having a Hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo oopherectomy and all will be sent to pathology. So the waiting goes on,
From there decisions will be made as to what happens next.During all this I am still taking Tamoxifen.
Don't know if this helps in any way or causes more concern.
    Regards Michelle
  • Same here! Some spotting after 18 months, had a hysteroscopy, but nothing to be alarmed about.I have been on Tamoxifen for 3 years now,and I just keep an eye on things. The gynaecological oncologist that I saw, said to report any more spotting immediately, but I haven't had any since.Cheers Robynxox
  • I had a similar experience in 2015 after being on Tamoxifen for 18 months. Slight bleeding (after ceasing my periods during chemo) and when I had the scans they showed endometrial thickening. I saw an oncology gynecologist who was satisfied that everything was ok but it was decided that I would change to Arimidex.
Waiting to hear that I didn't have endometrial cancer took me right back to those first days of being diagnosed with breast cancer. It is difficult but many people have the changes and it doesn't mean cancer.
Just keep breathing and be thankful that it is being investigated. What ever it is will be treated and you are getting excellent care.
  • Hi!  I am having regular checks through an Oncology Gynaecologist; I was sent to him as soon as I was put on Tamoxifen.  Had a pap smear, vaginal ultrasound and he booked me in for a hysteroscope.  I was having abnormal bleeding and it turned out I had a polyp that had prolapsed. The endometrium thickens and mine has changed but not enough for an alarm yet.  My ovaries are healthy, or at least they were at the last check, testing due again in June.

Hopefully your changes are minimal and they will keep a check.

Hope that helps to calm your thoughts and take care xx
