Swelling side effect

I finished my chemo two weeks ago (4xAC + 4docetaxal). I have now gained 4 kg of fluid. It is painful and makes me so tired. I have tried excercise every day, drinking lots and fluid tabs. It is really uncomfortable and I’d love some suggestions on how to manage or reduce it!  Thanks for any ideas

  • Thanks unicornkisses. I’m trying lots of things but haven’t tried massage. Luckily the weather is cooler because I think it will be worse when it is hot.
  • I blew up like a balloon on Docetaxel.
My GP increased my Lasix tablets to 3 per day to try and get my legs down to size. My feet were like two fat pillows and my shoes wouldn't fit.
I am now 13 weeks after the last Docetaxel and they are fine during the day and only swell slightly by the end of the day.
I have to say that spending 4 days in hospital with my legs up after mastectomy, and having the leg squeezey things going for 24 hours during and after surgery really helped.
Massage by my husband at night also helped on the rare occasion he could be persuaded to do it.
Putting your legs up is the best help I found, if you can possibly do it. And using the TED stockings if you can stand them. Otherwise try the support stockings.
I lost 2 1/2 kilos in 5 days at one point, and have lost 5 kilos in total since finishing chemo, all fluid, I am convinced.
  • I also found being in water helped as it supports everywhere. Even just walking in it slowly.  I had moon face...fluid in my boobs, a hump on my back, and visible fluid at collar bone and my legs felt like walking through concrete. By about 7 weeks I could suddenly move again...finally without feeling weighted down. Kath x
  • Hang in there @Moosie. The whole thing is such a performance, we can  only hope to get spat out the end of it. Marg xxx
  • Thanks Zoffiel you are right yes it has dropped me into menopause rather quickly as well as everything else that is going on. I have been patient whilst on chemo I guess I just forgot it will, take a while to get it all,out of my system. I’m having a mastectomy on 16th October (left) so just hoping it doesn’t all collide!
  • Give yourself a bit of time--the steroids are probably contributing, you've been artificially menopaused (if you were not there already) and I think that it takes a good while for your gut to start working properly after chemo. This is, of course, the sort of thing your oncologist needs to know, but it's an all too common story.

I've found getting back in the pool has given me some relief which lymphedema physio did not. Its hard to exercise when you feel like shit, but it's worth persisting.
