sore shoulder

Hi, I was diagnosed in October 2010 with Breast Cancer. I had a mastectomy in November. I was just wondering if anybody else has had a sore shoulder and not being able to move it as much. It's only happened in the last fcouple of months and I find it sore to lie on at night. Somebody mentioned to me about frozen shoulder and I hadn't heard of it before, but have since looked it up. I'm not sure what to do about it. I did tell my  radiologist and he suggested physiotherapy, or to keep trying to move it about 5 times up my back.

Thanks

Kay

  • Thanks for that information. I haven't seen anybody yet. I wasn't sure what to do. The breast care just gave me a brochure about exercise. Nobody else said anything.

  • Hi Kay

I had a mastectomy an partial node removal to my left side in August 2010. I'm lucky enough to have a Mum who is a massage therapist and give really good deep tissue massage. It has helped free alot of movement in my sholder and is almost 100%. Must say I still haven't had Radiation yet just chemo so will have to keep on with it throughout that. So I'm not sure if you're into that kind of thing or not but it's worth a try.

Did everyone get their exercise program when you got your operation from the hospital Physio? I've talked to a few people who had nothing. At the RBH they start you off immediately with exercises to do throughout your recovery and are monitored quite closely.

  • Thanks. There are a couple of physios in the little town where I live. I will ring one of them soon. I would have to travel further if I was going to find one with experience with women with breast surgery and radiotherapy.

  • I had a double mastectomy last year and suffered with shoulder pain for a long time after surgery. I found it difficult to raise my arms and to put them behind my back. I finally went to a physio which helped immensely. With that and the exercises I was given my shoulders are almost back to normal. it sounds as if a physio might be a good idea for you too. Try and find one who has experience with women who have had breast surgery and radiotherapy. They will have a better understanding of your situation.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
