Sore arm after chemo

Hi everyone

I was just wanting to ask a question. I have just had my 2nd round of FEC and noticed this time my arm is quite sore - right up the whole arm. Very sore to touch, almost like a bruised feeling...? And it feels quite weak too.

Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Will this affect my next chemo in terms of, well, are my veins ok? I don't want to seem like a wuss ringing my onco as it may be normal...?

  • Hi, I hope you got your arm checked out today, and got some answers. if you are concerned about anything, it's worth getting checked, or t least making a call and asking some questions. Take cafe, Lyn
  • I got a sore vein from my FEC and have now got a picc line in, it will ensure no more veins get more damaged.  It's not particularly painful, they give you a small local anesthetic and is well worth considering.  My chemo nurse said FEC was notorious for sore veins.  I also agree, you are not a wuss, get it checked out.  Good luck.

  • Ok, thanks everyone. My chemo was on Tuesday last week so it's been nearly a week and the arm has only been sore the last few days. I don't feel like such a wuss now after your replies as it looks like it could be a sign of something more serious such as a blood clot. I think I will touch base with my onco tomorrow. If it gets worse tonight I'll head to the ER.

  • Hi,

I was also on FEC and after my second round my arm was very sore.

I went to my GP and she send me to have an ultrasound.

I ended up with a clot in my arm and had to have clexane needles for 6 weeks.

Best way is to get it checked so you are on the 'safe side'.

    Cheers

  • Just realised its easter Monday and it might have been a few days for you. If its quite bad, go to emergency. They may be able to give you something for the inflammation and tomorrow get on to oncology to inspect, just in case its a muscle reaction which can happen and may require on going treatment.

  • If its just happened, get out of cold air conditioning and into warmth. My chemo one dose sat in my arm and every freckle was black and the arm awfully painful. Once I went outside it gradually came good.

  • I'm on AC chemo and had a similar experience after my second dose, although it was not an immediate effect but occurred several days later. My arm was tender and I had slight swelling in the inside of the elbow. My oncologist said chemo had irritated the vein. Next time I had chemo the nurses went for a vein that didn't flow into the irritated one so all was good and the tenderness subsided. However it's always good to get these things checked. If you don't want to call your oncologist in the first instance you could always touch base with your breast care nurse. And never worry about being a wuss when you have concerns!

  • It's normal to be sore. Check for any swelling or redness . If so see your GP especially if your concerned. Make sure they alternate arms fir your chemo. Rub some hiruoud on the area it helps.i ended up with superficial blood clots end me arms towards the end of chemo. Hope yours feel better. Bep xx
