So scared

This is 1 year after double mastectomy. I had no node involvment no chemo or radio. I thought all was going well and felt lucky that I didnt have to have chemo etc. I went to my check up today with my surgeon and he found a lump in my armpit. I feel like Ive been hit by a bus. I cant go through this again. I am due to go in tomorrow for an ultrasound but I am so scared that it is bad. Has anyone been in a similar situation to me. I feel that maybe I should have undergone chemo or something else. Should I have more glands removed initially. Should I be insisting on more than an ultrasound? I am so worried.

  • I had a left breast mastectomy in December 2013. I also had no node involvement and no radiation or chemo after the surgery. Last year all I had were ultrasounds. Due next month again but this time having ultrasounds and mammogram (on the one boob I still have). I sometimes can feel a difference in my armpit. I regularly see a physio who is also a lymphedema therapist and mentioned this to her on a visit. She helped reassured me (as per previous posted comments) and showed me how to massage the area to help lymph fluid flow better. I have found this has helped me on these occasions when it doesn't feel right. Hoping I get the same good news you did and that I remain all clear too. xxx

  • Hello again:) Ultrasounds are VERY reliable.I know this, because when I had my mammogram, and nothing showed up,my doctor said,' we will do an ultrasound just to be sure'.I feel that now is the time for you to try,if you can,to focus on something positive, instead of feeling so worried all the time.Inthink the best thing that we can all do after BC,is concentrate on our general health, therefore giving our bodies the best opportunity to STAY healthy. When my treatment finished, I started going to the library again.I would borrow books on nutrition ,exercise, pretty much anything that I thought could benefit me.By doing this,it not only gave me some great ideas about what I could start to do,but also got me out of my environment,to somewhere new,and actually took my mind off other things:):)Stay on this blog too, because it's a great place to help you feel connected, and show you that you are just like everyone else in the way that you are feeling at present!!! Cheers xoxRobyn

  • Thankyou for your reassurance. I saw the surgeon and he said the results of the ultrasound were fine. I was so relieved that I felt I had a third chance at life!

As the days go on my silly wondering mind starts to question the accuracy of the ultrasound.  Is there another way to test lymph nodes? Are ultrasounds accurate? Oh my . I cant stop wondering....

  • Even though it is difficult, Robyn is right, try to stay calm. There is every chance that this is nothing to worry about. All any of us can do is to follow the advice of our doctors. If your doctors felt that you did not need chemo originally then be reassured that you did what was recommended by the experts. I am glad that you do not have to wait long for the ultrasound. Keep in touch and I hope your mind is soon settled with a good result. Take care. Deanne xxx

  • Try to stay calm,as there is every chance that it is just what it is...a swollen node.Lymph nodes go up and down all the time.At my first appointment with my surgeon,I had a swollen AND painful node in my armpit. When I went for my ultrasound it had gone down, and nothing showed up.!!! Be guided by your surgeon,as they are the ones that know best.It is so hard not to let your mind wander, but try to stay busy until your ultrasound, and don't over stress.Stay in touch on here ,as I am sure that there will be others with similar experiences.xxxRobyn:):)
