Sloshing boob!
Hi ladies
I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy last Wednesday and am still in hospital as I am still draining too much to remove the drain according to my surgeon. When I walk or turn over etc in bed my boob is sloshing with all the fluid in there. Is that normal? I will ask the surgeon on Monday but don't want to look like a galoot if it is supposed to happen. It's quite off putting I can tell you. I ignored it for a while because I thought it was the fluid in the drain making the noise when I moved but then tonight it happened just after the nurse had emptied the drain so of course that alerted me lol. Should I tell her or is that a normal thing to happen while drain is still in? Thanks xx Lesley

- Finally home. The registrar tried unsuccessfully three times yesterday to drain the fluid from my breast. The surgical drain wasn't blocked according to the surgeon but she wanted it out to prevent an infection. I have an appointment with her on the 5th Oct for my results and if im still sloshing she said she will drain it in her office. In the meantime she doesn't want to risk introducing any infection into my breast by putting more needles into it. I'm happy with that decision.

- I'm nearly 4 weeks post mastectomy and on Friday they tried to drain some fluid but it's a hematoma. Never felt a thing as was given a local. Hope it's easy for you too.
- I just spoke to Dr Stewart's registrar and the drain is blocked. So the plan is to remove the dressing tomorrow and to drain as much of the breast with a needle as they can. I'm so looking forward to that on my poor sore, bruised and just operated on breast as you can imagine!
- Thanks @Afraser. It certainly is disconcerting. My surgeon won't be in until tomorrow but I'll tell her resident/intern or whoever it is covering for her today anyway. I know they ring her with updates.
- I had a seroma for a long time (drained repeatedly, filled repeatedly) and the sloshing was alarming (there was a LOT of fluid there!). There is natural concern about manually draining in regard to the risk of introducing infection, and at this stage, it's likely that at least some will naturally drain. But keep it in everyone's mind - it's terribly obvious to you but not so much to busy nursing staff.
- Thanks @iserbrown I told the nurse this morning and she also said to definitely tell the Drs when they come around today. I will do that. She is concerned that the drain isn't draining properly if there is that much fluid build up. I think and hope it's because the tumour was larger than expected and that space has to be filled by something. Anyway, I will let them know and see what is said.
- Agree tell them everything. I stayed in hospital for 7 days and the drain removed on day 6.
