Silicon gel during Rx

Hi, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a silicon "sheet" or gel during their radiotherapy treatment?  I am starting Rx this week & until my planning CT I was not aware of the gel as a way of looking after the breast tissue. It was only quickly discussed with my rad oncologist & I've not been able to find any info online. Lots of info about creams etc (any recommendations would be welcome, altho have heard lots of good things about MooGoo) but nothing about silicon gels...

  • Will do.  Thanks for the heads up.  All the best for your treatment.

  • Nicky!

I used Moo Goo (Skin Milk Udder Cream) three times a day during Radiation and my skin held up remarkably well.  I normally burn just looking at the sun so if you can't get the film I would definitely recommend it.

  • At my planning CT I was told I would need to wear the Mepital film for the planning stage too as it would alter the contours of the breast for planning purposes. Should you check with your centre before you start your planning to see what they like to use.

  • That sounds like it,  LRB, I'll do some research too

    Thanks for that x

  • Hi Nicky

I finished radio about a month ago using mepitel dressing.  The nursing unit manager told me on my last day that they are very excited about the "new gel" as trials showed it was proving to be very effective even more so than mepitel.  My skin now has healed beautifully.

    Best of luck

  • Hi,

Like Lyn I have read some posts here about Mepitel film/ Mepilex dressings.  Sounds as if it it is useful in helping with radiation induced skin reactions.  Now you have the name you will find lots of information on line from the manufacturer and some independant studies.  I am due to start my radiotherapy in February and I am hoping that when I go for my planning appointment they will tell me that they use this where i am being treated.  If they don't supply i will be asking if i can provide my own.  I don't think the cost is prohibitive and would be worth it to prevent a skin reaction.

  • Hi, haven't heard anything about silicon gel. Sounds interesting. There have been other posts about a product, I think called Mepitel. Try looking under the radiotherapy subject heading for posts. I'll also have a look.

The posts have all been very positive about it. I have 9 of 30 sessions to go. Where I'm having treatment don't want me to use anything but what they provide, cream/ointment wise.

Hope someone comes up with some answers.

    Take care, Lyn
