Side Effects?

I am becoming a worry wort!!! My surgery was 1 week ago today and the pain in my armpit is more now than before! And my arm is feeling heavy and achy. This is more than it has been since I came out of hospital.

I only had 2 nodes removed, so wonder, if this delayed onset of pain normal or should I see a doctor? My appointment with my surgeon is still 1 week away.

  • Hi ladies, I had my surgery 11th March and like some of you, the armpit has been the trouble. I had seroma buildup which "blew out" of the end of the incision and the doctor started me on keflex for any potential infection. The whole area has been painful and it is only the last 4 days that I have stopped taking paracetamol. 20 days after surgery the armpit incision is still weeping a bit and has some swelling still. Hoping this seals off soon! Cheers, Darlene

  • Hi Trish, I also had my surgery last week and I am finding that recovery from the lymph node incision is more painful than the actual Lumpectomy. Apart from doing the exercises that we are told todo from the physio I seem to be taking an awful lot of panadol. So I think it's normal how you are feeling. I f you have any concerns speak to your doctor or breast care nurses like I did.

    Take care,

  • This was one of the things that surprised me: recovering from lymph node was more 'painful' and restricted me more than lympdectomy: i had a sheet of progressive exercises from physio that helped and i was on something for discomfort too. Best wisehes
  • Hi Trish

I vacuumed after I got home and developed a seroma under my arm - so then started to take it easier (hard for me to sit around!) Tried not to move my arm too much and then noticed "cording" had developed which has just resoved itself after physio. (Had my mastectomy mid Oct...3 nodes taken out).

So, I figure...if you do nothing it can cause problems (cording)....if you do too much if can cause problems (seroma) - we just can't win sometimes! But it is still early days for you so defo try and rest up if you can......all the problems will eventually sort themselves out!

    Be kind to yourself....Jen x

  • you should just rest at this point, I know that many people think they are doing ok and start doing stuff and then wham it hits them. I was told that for a couple of weeks not to do house work.

    Take it as a holiday.

    Cheers

  • Thanks Deanne, I will see how it goes today and take your advice and call the breast care nurse. I did a couple of very light chores around the house yesterday, so that may have been the cause.  I will tell hubby that housework is out of the agenda from now on !!!! hehehe... I like that! Thanks

  • It is pretty normal to worry about everything at this stage of the process. There are many reasons why you may have more pain. Have you been doing too much? It could just be the nerve sensation returning to this area and that can result in things feeling different. Sometimes you can get some swelling that presses on nerves and makes things feel different. If you are concerned maybe you could ring the breast care nurse? You can expect some pain and changes in how things feel for a few weeks at least. As long as there is no sign of infection (redness, temperature, feeling unwell) then it is probably 'normal'. Any sign of infection then you need to contact your doctor. Hope it settles for you. Take care. Deanne xxx
