Should I question it?

Last month I had my one year since diagnosis mammogram and check up with a surgeon substitute. He has booked me in for another six monthly check as that will be one year from mastectomy. So far so good. However, he booked me for an ultrasound as well. Not a mammogram and he didn’t say whether it is for the mx side or boob side. This takes place after my appt with the surgeon.
My questions are : Do they do an ultrasound instead of a mammogram to change things up or will the ultrasound be for the mx side? And Does it make since to anyone that the ultrasound is after my surgeon appt?
This surgeon substitute didn’t even know he was supposed to check my mx site until I told him and then he only did a cursory check so I am a bit concerned he might have got these other things messed up.
Should I ask my cranky BC nurse about it or just leave things as they are and let them deal with their own stuff ups?
  • There are no silly questions and if you have the slightest reservation about anyone you see or any procedures they do --or dont--order,  get active about it. This site is littered with people who went with the flow even though they weren't happy with what was recommended and found out later they should have been more proactive.
If your BCN is allowed to be cranky, you should not be shy about being persistent. Mxx
  • In the lead up to my 'biopsy scare' in Dec, they only gave me an ultrasound, as I'd had a mamogram & US 6 months earlier when my tumour was detected. (My GP thought she detected another lump in my other boob, so had a script for both, but they only did the US.)
They said they didn't want to give me more rays (from the mammogram) than I had already had with 2 lots of MGs & US from Nov - July - so it could be the same reason for your 6 monthly 'just US' & not mammogram?
  • At my one year scan, I had 3D mammo and ultrasound but definitely ask if you are unsure.
  • Be proactive and ask !  Don't wait and the perhaps suffer from their stuff ups.  What does the form say (assuming he gave you the form to take to the radiographer) ?  It should say which side or the radiographer would not know what he/she is to do.
I am in the private system so perhaps things are done differently.  Call the radiology department and request clarification.
My breast surgeon sees me, runs his finger along the surgery scar and says how wonderful he is then gives me the form to have the mammogram on the other side.  If things need to be discussed I would be called in to see him otherwise I ring and the receptionist says all is OK.
Please, if you are uncertain, make sure you get the answers you want.
