Seroma

hi....I haven't written much in the last few months but I have been reading everyone's posts ... I became a member of this lovely group in January when I was told I have dcis I had my op in January and radiation in March for 5 Wks...
well anyway I do have a question ... How long do seromas last ....I was told while I was having radiation that the lump I felt was a seroma... And that it will just disappear ... But 9 months later I still have it...it hasn't grown any bigger or smaller but it is still there...so is this normal for it to last this long?

Thanks

  • Normally no, but mine lasted for 12 months and only stopped after surgery. The good news is that massage can reduce it. Depends how big it is, mine was large and stopped me from being fitted for a prosthesis which was a real nuisance as I was well and truly over pads by then. Your body is trying to help healing but sometimes that process carries on far longer than is necessary or beneficial. What you do depends on how much trouble it is causing. If none or not much, then perhaps leave it alone - but otherwise you may need some advice - breast care nurse would be good.
