Seroma

hi, has anyone had a seroma before? If so, what did it feel like? Mine is between my lumpectomy scar and armpit scar. Also have a little cording, have been doing exercises for it.
  • Totally agree with you Afraser.  I didn't think the body could have that much fluid.  It was like I was growing another boob!!!  Mine was not really painful, but uncomfortable as my skin was tight and had this lump.  Thankgod my surgeon got on top of it and its all gone now.  Speaking with your Surgeon is the way to go for sure.

  • I had one for nearly 12 months! No
pain at all but the sloshing noise when bending over was bizarre. Mixed feelings among medicos whether to remove fluid or not (risk of infection either way!) but removing it did little good for me as it refilled in a couple of days. The amount of fluid possible is significant but usually not great (mine was ridiculous). Massage from a qualified therapist may help disperse the fluid. Best to get medical advice though. Any pain, redness consult straight away.
  • Hi MelissaD, I've had extensive experience with a Seroma.  I was diagnosed in 2013 & had all my treatment in 2014 with BiLat Mastectomy.  My Seroma developed about 10 days after surgery and was quite persistent.  My surgeon drained it heaps and heaps of times as did my Radio Oncologist.  Eventually my surgeon put me back into hospital and "glued" the tissue down - this still didn't work.  I ended up with an infection and 6 days in hospital on IV antibiotics and still it persisted - surgeon in the end decided to put in permanent drains which lasted 3 & 5 days and in the end he just left a little hole for the fluid to escape from and I wore a dressing over the spot.  On his advice I took Neurophen for some time as this helps with the drying up of things and it eventually stopped.  I had my surgeon completely baffled and he only just mentioned a couple of months ago that my case was a test case and that he had spoken about it at a conference he had attended where other surgeons were asking what could be done.
Hope yours sorts itself out eventually.
  • I have none of that, strangely. I did see my oncologist about it, then my surgeon came in to see me. I felt a lump that moved and I freaked out, but after examination he didn't have a concern that it would be anything sinister as I had clear margins of the breast and all lymph nodes that were removed and had all clear scans. It wasn't there in the beginning and only developed after surgery obviously. They mentioned cording because of the tight pull I feel in my arm and said seroma also. but I'm still freaking out over it
  • Hi Michelle, my seroma developed 10 days after mastectomy & was very painful because it came with a Staph infection. My chest was very red extending to the other breast with a big bubble of fluid at beginning of scar. After being drained 6 times & 2 courses of antibiotics it resolved. They are quite common, you need to see your doctor if you think you have one.
