I hope you are on antibiotics for that foot, @kezmusc - and @kmakm is right!! You DON'T do things by halves!!   Those palm frond spikes are not unlike stingray spikes - they go in easily enough but are designed not to come out easily & can take months.  My stingray spike was a shocker - it took more than 3 months - festering the whole time!  :( 

Yep, I reckon I'd go with the later option for the surgery as you have it all planned, unless you can get her to do it earlier.
