Recently diagnosed

Hi All,

I've recently been diagnosed with stage II IDC. I had surgery last week to remove lump from my breast and all my lymph nodes under my left arm. I'm home now, but feeling a bit sore and uncomfortable. I see the surgeon again on Monday morning and oncologist after that.

I'm new to all this, it was only 4 weeks ago that I found a lump under my arm and here I am now with BC at age 40 with a 2 year old and a 4 year old.

As I'm only at the start of my journey, I think it would be nice to be in contact with people who are a bit further along the road, so they can share their wisdom.

I am amazingly lucky to have found so much support from family, friends and out here in cyber-land.

Nic

  • Thanks for your messages girls. Although this disease is dreadful, it has already opened up a new world of lovely, positive, loving people and for that I'm thankful.

Unfortunately my margins didn't come back clear (after 34mm being removed) and I have extensive LVI (lymphovascular invasion), so I'm back in theatre for a mastectomy of my left breast  tomorrow. I can't find a lot of info about LVI, but my surgeon told me it wasn't unexpected as we knew the cancer was in my lymph nodes. If there are any positives, only 2/16 lymph nodes were cancerous and it is hormone receptive so I guess I'll be in for early menopause (perhaps that's better than PMT!!!!!)

Everyone I talk to keeps saying how brave I am and how do I feel, Bugger being brave, I've got cancer in my breast and the sooner it comes off the better my chances are of it not spreading. I only need to look at my kids to know that  having only 1  boob doesn't matter. I told them that my boobie is sick and it is going to be cut off, to which my 4 year old replied "I hope they're not going to use a saw"....LOL... Anyway, I feel okay about everything at the moment, but may be a different story when I wake up tomorrow after surgery with only one boob!! Hubby is being absolutely fantastic and I think it must be almost harder for him. He is the one who is working, running around after kids and trying to keep the household running. The girls from my mums group have also been my rocks. They are filling my fridge with food, cleaning my house, minding my kids and doing my washing and I know they're in it for the long haul.

    Will send a post post-op.

Thanks for your suuport and wishes. they make a huge difference.

  • Hi Jo,

Thanks for your message. I see my surgeon tomorrow so am hoping for clear margins on the lumpectomy and she should also have the pathology back on everything that was removed. Then I guess it will be off to the oncologist. The surgeon indicated early on that it would most likely be a surgery/chemo/radio program as it was in my lymph nodes too.

It's really hard with the kids - logistics have been difficult while hubby has been working and I've been in hospital and recuperating, but hubby is having this week off so this should be a better week. Will keep in toch with the treatment plan.

Thanks again for your words Jo.

  • Hello Nic, some of the girls here told me this several months ago and I found it funny ........" Welcome to the club none want to be a member!"

It is a short message to send you my love.

I must say that everything will get better with the time, the first few weeks are the hardest. Try to remain positive and calm.

I am 32, I have a beautiful husband and 1 year old baby. It is amazing what love can do.

About my diagnose, it was Grade II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, I had a lumpectomy last year, a bit of chemo, I have chosen not to do radiotherapy and I am still thinking in taking Tamoxifen, as my cancer was only 30% estrogen positive. I may take the pills for a little while and see how I feel. I hope your treatment goes well and please count on me in anything I can be useful. I only check Internet once in a while as I am spending most of my time now enjoying my baby, meditating and I find hard to check e-mails often, etc.....Sorry for the short message........May the light and love of your kids help you to shine and heal very soon!!

  • Hi Nic, and welcome to this site. I'm sorry you have had to start this horrible journey . I also had stage II  and grade 2 IDC but thankfully i did not have any node involvement. My cancer was Hormone positive, so my treatment  is Tamoxifen for 5 years and zoladex injections for 2 yrs due to being pre-menopausal. Unfortunately this shuts down the ovaries and sends you into early menopause.   I had a lumpectomy and a sentinal node clearance. I had 5 weeks of daily radiation  but thankfully no chemo for me. I am now  due for my 6 mthly checkup to see if everything is still ok.

I was lucky that all my children are adults,  not like you having little ones to care for who really can not comprehend what is happening. It must be really hard dealing with little ones along with your own emotions, but it's good to hear that your family and friends have been their for you.

Do you know yet what your treatment plan is, or will you find all that out on Monday? Have your emotions run wild yet or have you been able to keep them under-wrap .  I really hope everything goes  ok on Monday and make sure you keep  in touch .  Cheers jo xx
