Radiation finally over

I had my last radiation treatment today and it feels so wonderful to have finished treatment. My skin is very burnt and sore, but the nurses have given me two pots of zinc and caster oil cream to apply. I don't think it will sink in that I don't have to go to the hospital until same time tomorrow!

  • Yes I agree Anne, more should be said about the side effects of the radiation as it can be extremely painful.  It also appears to be and listening to our pink lady friends, that some hospitals have a better treatment plan than others.  Personally, I found that the creams I was given could have been much better.  Surely, given the pain and discomfort we had to endure could have been treated by a cream with some anaesthetic in it, which unfortunately wasn't offered to me.

I burnt badly also and I have relatively dark skin.

The absolute worst thing for me was the bra rubbing on the node scar, it still causes me grief to this day.  When I used the pads I itched like crazy, but it was brushed aside.  I also developed a red rash across my tummy from one side to the other, which itched like hell, I reckon I got it about two weeks into treatment and had it for about two weeks after.  Can you tell me what folicalitis is please, as no-one at the hospital I attended, seemed to take much notice of my rash, let alone tell me what it could have been.

    Thanks,Dale

  • Thanks Dale I was surprised I was so elated...but you do feel that a little bit of your life is back. Yes, I have found baths and ice packs a big relief. I think more needs to be explained about the skin reactions too. I had folicalitus (not sure of spelling) first, I was so itchy and I didn't expect to get quite as burnt as I did, but my skin is fair. All the best to you too Thanks Anne
  • Hi AnnW,

I finished my radio in November and I can still remember the excitement.  It took me about a week to finally realise that I could actually do what I wanted and go where and when I wanted to do something.  The part that I hated the most was that I had no control over my life for six weeks, but hey it is now just a memory!  My skin was very burnt and sore, it is said that a lukewarm bath is very valuable.  I often put a cold pack on the area and found that helped.  Also, toward the end of radio I just wore a big top and went bra less.  No-one knew and it was more comfortable.  I personally used Bepanthan creme and had success with this.  I personally don't think enough is said about the burning associated with radio.  One good thing is that when your burning starts to heal, it really doesn't take very long at all.

    Good luck with it all,

    Dale
