Ovarian cyst & petrified

Hi all I haven't been on here for a while but after going through breast cancer in 2013 - 8 rounds of chemo,  surgeries & radiation I'm now wondering if I should have had a hysterectomy. I've just found out I have a cyst on my ovary which because of my history the doctor is going to remove my ovary & test the cyst ( looking for cancer I'm guessing ). Just interested to know how many of you have had a hysterectomy after breast cancer & why?

Feeling scared & desperate!!

  • Hope all goes well. My first reaction to cyst is that I had one removed in my early 20s and since then nothing: I have asked my oncologist about hysterectomy and he doesn't recommend this: and then went on to joke and say "how about removing the spleen?"  But that's just his opinion on my clinical picture and I like how nothing is automatic and low key.  Wouldn't suit everyone.  My gp said none of her other women with my kind of bc have had hysterectomy.

  • Hi Tonya,

So sorry to read that you have pneumonia and hope your xrays are negative. Let us know how you go.  Michelle xx

  • Hi Andir,

I had a hysterectomy after treatment as I had previously had an ovarian cyst (which was benign.)  My oncologist said let's hit it with everything while we have it on the run!  It was done laparoscopically with 4 tiny cuts and a few days Panadol. In fact, I really had to remember not to lift things for 2 weeks, as I felt so normal.  Good luck!  Michelle xx

  • Hi Andir, I had a large ovarian cyst removed the year before I got bc.The doctor can tell it's a cyst from the ultrasound but they'll often remove it just for safe measure. So if they are calling it a cyst then most likely it is.A hysterectomy is a big operation and needs careful consideration.Once we've had a cancer diagnosis we'll always worry with each new health complaint. You do get abit better at it after many years.I have pneumonia at the moment but ofcourse I'm now worrying it might be lung cancer.Another chest X-ray will hopefully allay my fears.I know how you feel.Big hug,Tonya xx

  • Hi, my oncoligist was very keen to do a hysto, we waited till I was fully menopausal which was determined by constant blood test  I had it done 11 months ago, her reasoning was it's one less place for the cancer to go to as my cancer lobular carcinoma was hormone driven. I was of work for 8 weeks as I also had a prolapse repair. I'm so glad I had it done, mind you not all ladies I know had it done or was recommended. Ask your onco. Adean
