Osteoporosis

So glad I finished all my treatment 1st March. 8 months of being unwell with one thing or another. Then I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis. I turned over in bed and fractured a vertebrate and rib. Easy as that. Still healing after three months and now on daily calcium and a once a week tablet called Fonat and exercising everyday with walks. I was set to go back to work but because I can't lift anything heavy I have had to postpone that. I don't want to risk more fractures. ?? Dr's think I may have had osteo before treatment but chemo definitely made it worse.

So all you lovely ladies, make sure they check your bone density and have good levels of vitimin D (this helps absorb the calcium into the bones)

  • That's interesting Robyn, I will look out for that book. My diet is fairly good and I mainly drink water (and the occasional wine!) I hate soft drinks, so no need to worry about them!

Do you mean you eat salmon everyday? I like salmon, but not sure about eating it everyday!

thanks to everyone that has replied.

  • Wow. That really sucks. I am taking a low dose of vit d, however the recommendation came from my nurse friend not my oncologist. We are quick to learn about what chemo we need but don't hear about this sort of life long side effects. Quite scary. I wish you all the best with your treatment and stops future fractures. Hugs Airlie ??

  • Hi Linda,I also was diagnosed with osteoporosis, after treatment. My osteoporosis is advanced, and I started on injections,6 monthly. However, just recently I have stepped things up a notch or 2!! I have just read a book by Dr.Ray Hinish called the osteoporosis diet.It was VERY interesting, and I took the information from it and talked to a nutritionist ,who, pretty much agreed with what was in the book.I now supplement with Vit D,Vit K2 and Bone Matrix support  ( by eagle) which is equal amounts of calcium and magnesium ,and also other important vitamins and minerals.I have pretty much changed my diet, and now I eat on a daily basis,20 walnuts or almonds, salmon WITH bones,LOTS of green vegetables( especially kale or spinach raw) fruit for Vit c( oranges or kiwi) lots of water and absolutely NO soft drink,EVER!!!!!!It is much more in depth than this, but this is the basic idea. Exercise daily, and especially weight bearing exercise,This can even be walking up stairs:):) Walking is good, but it has to be fast and make sure to strike the ground as hard as you can with your feet.Take care and please stay in touch.Cheers Robynxox

  • Hope you recover well.

I wish someone had told me, so wanted to pass onto every one else.

  • So sorry that this happened to you.  So unfair as well.  You just turned over in bed!  Thank you for the heads up.  I've just had a mastectomy, am still in hospital and don't know what lies ahead in treatment yet, but I will certainly up my calcium intake, and walk as soon as I am able.  I wish you the best of luck in recovering.
