Not coping already

My Mum had breast cancer at 59 - still well at 82.  I was on yearly visits to specialist and yearly mammograms till 3 years ago.  Had a bad experience with mammogram and haven't been back for 3 years.  How could I be so stupid.  Grandmother also had BC although in her 70's.  Have been dieting and lost fair bit of weight and discovered by accident large lump.  That was last Wednesday.  GP Thurs.  Ultrasound and mmg Friday Specialist this morning which incl needle biopsy and then core biopsy with extra needle biop of one lymph gland this afternoon.  I am in pieces.  Broke down after core biopsy and not managing well - but I don't even have a diagnosis yet.  My GP was in tears yesterday when she was explaining process.  Specialist was great but I am certainly getting 'not good' signals.  I feel a big fraud even coming onto this site with diagnosis still to come but need help.

  • Hi Helen - as you can see there are lots of us in the same boat.  We're all in this together!  Never ever allow yourself to feel silly or any other negative thought.  Concentrate on you and what questions you may want to ask when you have your appointment on Monday.  It is what it is and you know when you come back on here others will pick up on your thoughts and help you through.  Positivity is the key with BC!

When you are in this predicament everything in time looks different.  You appreciate all the little things that people say and do for you and you let some things wash over you.

When I was first diagnosed the Counsellor had said to always bring it back to now.......if you're feeling anxious pat your legs and say yes it's me, I'm still here and do that with your hips et cetera.  Whilst you are doing that you are concentrating on now and calming yourself down.

Wishing you well and take care

    Christine xx

  • Thanks for the support.  I slept quite well last night - for one thing I was exhausted but the other was - and I know it sounds corny - but I could feel the love.  It helps to know I am not the only one.  At the same time it is alarming how many people there are out there going through the same stuff.  Follow up with specialist on Monday - I thought I would have a bit longer to prepare myself. xx

  • I am with you Brenda, I saw my McGrath nurse before I went to surgery as I was not coping with diagnosis she was great. So make contact as soon as possible.

    al the best

  • No good putting blame on yourself what's done you can't change, but you have moved forward now and at least whatever it is has been found, I'm sure we've had the what if in our lives many times. Crying is natural and you will think all sorts of things till you find out what you are dealing with, it's amazing the strength we find when we have to. Adean x

  • Hi Helen,

I felt like a fraud coming on here too as it is my daughter who has BC not me :(  I bet you are reading this in tears I did when I first posted and the ladies answered me and they knew how I was feeling,  I have felt the love and friendship from all the lovely ladies on here and so will you :)

Try not to beat your self up over not doing your mm its in the past it is what it is... I hope you don't get the awful phone call but if you do you will need your strength to fight and we will be there for you every step of the way

Big cyber hugs for you take a deep breath and don't stress (yeah I know easier said than done )

X fingers for a good result

    Cheers Sue xxx

  • I don't blame you that core biopsy is crap and it took weeks for me to get over it and carried the bruising for ages.

If you are so far only going through your GP Dr, then the McGrath nurse wouldn't have been notified yet probably of your condition. I only found out after I was referred to the surgeon at the general hospital. I could have really done with a consultation with the nurse earlier.

To speed things up so your local breast nurse is aware, give the general hospital outpatients a ring or the breast screening clinic at the hospital (my mammogram was done with a private bulk billing mob), and see if they can give you her contact number. McGrath nurses are worth their weight in gold at calming the early panic stations of diagnosis.

  • Hi Helen. Don't feel like a fraud. When the had my core biopsy I asked the radiologist how worried I should be. Hi response? We're just getting all the information the surgeon will need. He was right. I don't mean to be negative, & I hope it's a good result. Either way, you will find support here.

    Take care, Lyn

  • Hi Helen, ain't that the truth, you need help, we all need help, no one can cope with this on their own. That's why this site is so good, chatting to other women, getting advice & just sharing how you feel. I really hope your biopsy comes back with good news, but if not, we are here for you. Just a tip, my boob got really sore after biopsy & ice packs helped a lot. Wishing you all the best, Tracey??

  • Hi Helen welcome don't be ,so hard on yourself the waiting can be the hardest. There is nothing we can do once we hear those words except take it one day at a time. Good luck this is what this site is about, support take carex

  • Hi Helen

you are not a fraud at all. We have all been where you are and all of us know the strain of waiting for results. There's no point beating yourself up over not having the regular mammograms. What's done is done. Hopefully everything will be fine and it will just be a reminder to you to be proactive with your health.  If it is a diagnosis of bc, then you will deal with it and do what you have to. The thing is that none of us have a choice but to deal with it. Some days we do that better than others. Take one day at a time and one appointment at a time. Get as much info as you can and ask lots of questions so that you have a better understanding of what you will be up against. And remember that there is good survival rates now and your mum is a very good example of that. I shall keep my fingers crossed for you that all is well. Good luck. Karen xox
