Node removal

hi there all, I am scheduled to have a node removal surgery in 2 weeks, just to make it 100% that the Cancer has not spread to them. This is a seperate procedure to the mastectomy in my situation. I was just wondering what the recovery is like?
i work in child care and concerned as my job is extremely Manual.

I had an axilla clearence about 6 weeks post bilateral mastectomy. I had 24 nodes removed on the left side. Not fun but doable lol. Best advice I was given is to keep using your arm, do the excersizes and be patient. Take your pain reliever as needed.its taken me about 4 weeks to be about 90%. I still won’t pick up anything heavy or reach to hang washing.
  • It seems a bit variable - like so much else. I had 17 nodes removed (one malignant, they all looked very suss on ultrasound!) but at the same time as my mastectomy. I have had little actual problem even though I have lymphoedema. I have no discomfort or stiffness, my mobility is fine, I can lift things and use my arm normally, I just have to be a little careful to keep up exercises and be a bit vigilant about disinfecting cuts and scrapes (lymphoedemic limbs are less capable of warding off infection).
Even if you have some number of nodes removed, statistically you are less likely to get lymphoedema than to get it. Some lymphatic disturbances are very short term. If you only have a few nodes removed, you are much less likely to have any lymphatic side effects.
Impacts on nerves are very varied - some have numbness short or longer term, some have some discomfort - I had no discomfort at all, and excellent mobility but still have less feeling in my affected armpit - affects absolutely nothing I do but if I waxed, I would have to be a bit careful as the lack of feeling is obvious about detecting hot and cold.
Short answer, you need to know what may or may not have got to nodes as it may affect your further treatment. If all clear, that may mean no chemo, which would be a good thing!  Best wishes.
  • Hi @Mic80. I had about 16 nodes removed at the time of my mastectomy and that was a longer recovery than the mastectomy. I work as a veterinary nurse so took 3 weeks off to recover from the full surgery and then went back on lighter duties (I also had chemo after this so had to be careful). Just make sure to do all your exercises and keep and eye out for any symptoms of cording or lymphodema. Best of luck for your surgery xoxooxx
