Newly diagnosed

I am married 42 year old with a 9 year old son.

I was diagnosed on 11/12/13  - I had a lump in my left rbeast, which turned out to be a cyst. they found cancer in my right breast - I had no symptoms whatsoever.

I was shcoked because I felt fine, with no idea that I could have something so serious. I have since had 8 core biopsies, 6 fine needle aspirates, CT, MRI, MRI fusion, ultrasound and surgery just last week.

I'm hoping to connect with others who are younger - I realise 42 is not as young as some of you, but all the other ladies I know personally are in their 60's and 70's. While I recognise that it is no less traumatic for them, the dynamics they have to deal with are different to mine.

I live on the Central Coast of NSW and have found that some of my friends have abandoned me since my diagnosis. I guess I just need to know that I'm not alone in feeling this way.

Hoping that all of you have had a great day,

Karen

  • That means you're 1/3 of the way through chemo Karen. That's awesome. The hair loss part is not nice and indeed confronting. Though was nice to have none on my legs for a while ! I found the eyebrows and eyelash thing worse. It really messed with my head, but now they are back. In fact all my hair follicles have come back with avengeance. I know you can get through this Karen. You have already been through so much is probably what you are thinking? But you really can get through the chemo, and the hair loss and all the other side effects. Focus now on what you can control, and that is getting through each chemo and each day. Hang in there Karen. We are all behind you, with you, next to you...Lisa xxx
  • Thanks for your lovely words ladies,

Things turned out to be a bit more troublesome in my journey - lumpectomy first, followed by 8 pages of pathology. A bilateral matectomy done 2 weeks after the lumpectomy, all within  6 weeks of diagnosis.

I had 3 tumours in the right, with areas of both DCIS and LCIS in both breasts.

I am now on chemotherapy - 4 down, 12 to go. I have found it confronting to lose my hair, and without breasts as well, I'm not feeling so girly at the moment.

My husband has been amazing though and my son is coping very well. So-called friends have stayed away, but it is their loss, not mine! I have found so much support both on here and on the FB page for younger women with this.

I do know that this will be a distant memeory before too long, but appreciate that you ladies understand just how hard it is to travel this path.

    Thanks for the support!
