Mouth ulcers

Hi all,

Treatment is going very well with only 8 more taxol/herceptin to go but I am suffering horribly from mouth ulcers. I've tried everything! Biotene twice a day, cutting down on hot drink/food and replacing these with water only. I'm trying to drink at least 8 glasses a day.  Very painful and it's making me very irritable. No other side effects except for tiredness.

Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Take care and thinking of you all often

  • My, my. How times have changed. We all now know the importance of true oral hygiene and the positives preventing mouth ulcers. I diligently floss, brush and rinse with bicarb water. This prevents the acidic dangers after foods and drinks which threaten with ulcers. Visiting the dentist regularly has helped too. My mouth is clear for another 6 months. Hooray!!! Am doing something right. Another damned hot flush. Am so blessed to have a portable cooler, with remote and timer. This cools me down without my needing to think too hard about it. Unable to sleep tonight. Awake for 4hours this morning. No napping during the day. Just awake at night. It'll be so good to be free of everything associated with this experience. Am the most self-absorbed in all life.
  • Hi Alison, I had a nasty one last week and used bicarbonate soda on it. I have to say it hurts like hell but it works! Hope this helps Love Penny xx
  • Thanks so much for your post and kind words. I bought some Kenalog today and will try it before bed. Thanks.

I had number 5 out of 12 weekly treatments today. I took my lap top in and wrote reports to pass the time. One of the nurses mis-read my chart and thought I was 3 weekly therefore longer and slower so I was wondering why it was taking so long! She was very apologetic! These things happen. Must admit I was becoming a little impatient. 3.5 hours turned into 5!! Pays to know what is going on and to be one step ahead!!

Hope all is well with you. School is keeping me going though I do have some issues with 1 staff member. A little bit of harrassment and bullying and if it was earlier in the year I would report her but I only have to see out 3 more weeks. Stress I don't need but my boss and deputies are brilliant and right behind me.

    Be in touch soon,

    Lots of love

  • Thanks Jayne! I'll try that again next week! I did this with icypoles during my AC treatment and that was obviously the trick! I haven't done this this time.

Thanks for your great advice. Apparently Kenalog is also good.

    Yes it helps alot, thanks.

    Good luck with everything too,

  • I bought some Kenalog today. Many people have said how good this is.

    Nice to meet you, too!

  • Hi Al

So pleased to hear that in general all is going well. As you know I was on FEC 100 then Taxotere and also got ulcers after my first session (also a long time sufferer like Sam). I use Kennalog too but the other thing which I think really helped was my lemonade icy poles! I lived on them for the first 10-14 days after each treatment except first and din't get any more ulcers. I did and still do get 'splits' in the corners of my mouth and Bepanthon (nappy rash ointment) works wonders!!

I had my last chemo on Oct 20 but it did take me a full 2 weeks to start to function again!! Have started radiation this week, day 4 today and so far so good - worse bit is the daily 2 and 1/2 hour travelling there and back each day!!

You amaze me that you are still managing 3 days a week at school. I am only managing 1-2 depending on the week! that strength is obviously your key to doing so well!

Take care and lots of hugs,

    Dette xxoo

  • Hi Alison

Sorry to hear about your mouth ulcers - I was on a similiar mix to you and although I didnt suffer with any ulcers one of the ladies I spoke to at a BCNA forum day told me to break a vit e liguid capsule onto the ulcers.

She had suffered from mouth ulcers and apparently this really worked for her.

May be worth giving it a go for some relief x

    All the best

  • Hi Alison,

I am having FEC100 treatments and I get mouth and oesophageal ulcers too.  A trick my oncologist told me was to suck ice during a specific part of my chemotherapy, the ice stops the cells taking up the chemo drugs.  It worked brilliantly on my mouth ulcers but not for the oesophageal ones.

I also found drinking smoothies, basically anything cold, also helped.

    I hope this helps,

    Jayne xx :)
