mastectomy tomorrow
Hi ladies, tomorrow I go in for mastectomy and axillary clearance. I'm first up in the morning so at least won't be waiting long. Any tips are welcome. How much pain are you in when you wake up. I'm feeling very anxious as I've never had an operation before. Thanks in advance.

- LMK74MemberThanks @Romla, can't believe how tired I am. Still feel kinda out of it.
- RomlaMemberGlad to hear the op went well even though the anaesthetic knocked you around.Might be wise to keep pain relief of some kind in your system as may help with the bruised and battered feeling post op.Regardless it's over and the healing process has begun - very pleased to hear you are ok.xo
- melclarityMember@LMK74 glad you came through and are relatively ok! I suffer from Anaesthetic so my last 2 ops this year they didn't put it down my throat, but intravenous and it helped alot. I am super drug sensitive, so managed on panadol and nurofen together..that was really hard though for a Mastectomy/diep flap recon but I did it. Definitely have a backstop just in case. take care xo M
- LMK74MemberThanks @Nat79, I will ask before I'm discharged.
- Nat79MemberI found the pain from the drain the worse. I made the mistake of leaving hospital only on panadol and returned to emergency at 4am the next morning needing something stronger. So I would advise even if you feel ok, ask for a script just in case you need it.
- LMK74MemberThanks Unicornkisses and socoda.
Op went well, I puked from anesthetic though. This morning feel bruised and battered but so far pain not bad, haven't had any pain relief since waking from op yesterday. - socodaMemberHey @LMK74, hope all went well. I was in hospital for 6 days (had mastectomy with immediate recon using implant). Only used strong pain killers for 3 days and then was on panadol only. Try and get someone to get you a U pillow from KMart as that will help you be supported when you are trying to sleep and make sure that you keep the intake of panadol to a regular basis until you get rid of your drains. When you are aching at the sentinel node site get your breast care nurse to give you some thick dressings so you can slip them between your bra band and your skin and this will act as a buffer and help to relieve some of the pain. So good that you're through this part. Rest, relax and try and get some beautiful sunshine. All the best lovely. Xx Cath
- UnicornkissesMemberI remembered last night re pain.
I couldn't sleep on my right side (mastectomy side) for about three weeks, using the breast care pillow under my arm to sleep was great and helped my husband as it protected my wounds and he didn't worry so much about hurting me.
I could sleep on my left side after a week as long as I used the breast pillow.
I had no problems sleeping at home. Sleeping in hospital is tedious. I should have taken sleeping tablets.
You can usually organise either your surgeon or the house doctor to approve them in case you need them, do it during the day so the nurses can get them straight away if you can't sleep.
I hope you are feeling well and relieved it is all over and now you just have to heal and get used to the new you.
I am beginning to feel better about the reflection in the mirror, and my soft form from the My Care kit arrived today so I will be happier about being out without a jacket or scarf now too.
Thinking about you and sending healing thoughts. ❤️ - RomlaMemberPS take a good big book midday TV is woeful
- RomlaMemberEven though my husband dropped me in he eventually left and was there for 6 hours having various prep stuff done - everyone down to the young orderlies were very kind and reassuring - theatre staff and my surgeon had that light touch I needed to quell my fear. Theatre has to be cold so they had a warmed blanket ready for me. After surgery had wonderful nurses looking after me .Only gripe I have is hm times my vitals were taken when I wanted to sleep but understand was necessary. Forgot breast nurse visited pre Op gave me heaps of info, a free Berlei bra and a wonderful cushion bag to wear between my arm and breast made by local craft group -was brilliant not only in colour! Will be thinking of you tomorrow and sending good vibes - we mightn't be there physically but we are with you.
