Looking for nutrition/natural medicine recommendations

Hi all,

Absolutely hating this journey to be honest. Single mum of two auDhd teens. It’s been hell. I’m angry and don’t feel I’ve accepted any part of this. I’m just recovering from double mastectomy and now waiting to see if I need chemo/herceptin. Waiting waiting forever waiting. That’s one of the worst parts. Anyway, just wondering if any of you know any good online nutritional medicine/naturopaths etc who use good evidence based practice to help me navigate through this **bleep** show? I start ovarian suppression and AIs next week, before going back for more surgery because my nipple is now on the banned list 🙄
Many thanks and all the love in the world to you all xxxxx

  • HiAnnabanna  easy to say but very hard to do. Try not to get too far ahead of yourself  and yes the waiting waiting waiting is really the hardest part. Along with the emotional roller coaster might be worthwhile hooking up with a breast care nurse or a mcgrath cancer care nurse  they usually are the best source of local information   Mine led me to the local cancer wellness centre that have heaps of alternative/ complimentary ways of coping  with this Sh*t show called Cancer

Ad jjr23 said We have to be very careful of the interaction between medications and supplements.  I personally didn’t realise that a particular type of orange was going to have an impact on my medication. I knew grapefruit was in the not to have list.
its the same with some of the antihistamine I take it for an annoying side effect from one of my MET’s drugs  oncologist told me which ones I could have. My gastroenterologist for my now removed gallbladder switched my reflux tablet to ease its side effects.  Still have the reflux. Plus he suggested natural peppermints to suck and they are the best value for money. My lung clinic told me what to do when adverse weather etc affects my lungs. Eg wind etc   And what natural things i could safely buy at the local shops for the side effects from my puffers.
when your appointed medical oncologist sets out your future ongoing treatment after you finish with the initial stuff you will be better placed to use the natural alternative/ complimentary.
i just try to have a balanced healthy diet with lots of water.

Hi Annabannana thank you for sharing your current situation - I'm so sorry to read how you are currently feeling, that sounds incredibly tough. Waiting and uncertainty can be so draining - it’s understandable to feel frustrated and burnt out especially whilst you trying to 'do the mum thing' all around this curveball journey.

In terms of emotional support - please do reach out, rant, ask, share and vent to this Online Network. Something I love about this community is the way everyone bands together and supports each other in the most difficult moments. We are here for you!

In terms of nutrition/natural medicine, JJR23 is right that the best option would be to speak with your oncologist about the best supporting medicine options for you - sometimes your options are dependent on your type of cancer, or other parts of your genetic make-up. You might also like to do some of your own research for accredited practitioners through the Australian Natural Therapists Association or Nutrition Society of Australia, as they often list professionals experienced in oncology care.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to our helpline on 1800 500 258, we can even help you debrief after your next oncologist appointment, or walk you through some possible options out there for nutrition and natural medicine support 💙

  • Hi.  I can definitely understand how you feel.  I have 5 kids myself.  Waiting is definitely hard!  I would be very careful with nutritional advice as some products interfere with treatments and if you do not know what the next stage is you will need to find that information out first.  I would suggest you speak with your oncologist in this regard first before you consult with any nutritionists/dieticians.  I wish you all the very best in your long journey.  x
