Letrozole

Good evening ladies, I have just returned home after seeing my Oncologist, he has prescribed me Letrozole and I am interested in hearing from anyone that can perhaps share how this drug is treating them. I have read some horrendous reviews and I’m terrified to start taking it. There seems to be dreadful side effects.  Kindest Regards, Cafrini60 x

  • I can say while on Letrozole after Tamoxifen that I had way less hot flushes and much less intense. Thats about the only good thing about it as I had other side effects mostly quirky to me.
  • @Cafrini60 Go into it with the mental state that you will be okay - and you quite possibly will be.  But keep your onc informed if you do have any side effects.
  • Thank you @Cafrini60, that's very kind. Magnesium was the very first thing I tried. It didn't do anything for me, but I'm thinking about trying it again, as I've now been on Letrozole for a year and things have changed. K xox
  • Kmakm I did read that some ladies had some relief by taking magnesium. You are being very strong, sticking it out, I hope things improve for you, this cancer thing is so hard, with love Cafrini60x

  • Oh, thank you all you beautiful caring ladies for your comments. I did read reviews, and they certainly scared me, I have had so many problems since my diagnosis, I’m terrified at the thought of more problems. I have already been through menopause with minimal issues which I have always been thankful for, after reading all of your posts it has given me some hope. I will take on your advise and work thru one day at a time and maybe I will be one of the lucky ones, I could do with a break. From the bottom of my heart 💓 I thank you 🙏 x
  • Hi @Cafrini60. I am one of the ones who is having a difficult time of it on Letrozole. However there are plenty who do not. It can depend somewhat on whether you have already gone through menopause, as the plunge in your estrogen levels won't be quite as severe if you have. If you find you can't manage Letrozole you can try one of the other AIs, and the oncologists generally seem OK with taking drug holidays. They know drop out rates are high so are happy for us to take a break every now and then.

There are no easy answers. This medicine is currently the best we have to combat recurrence in ER+ cancers. I'm gritting my teeth and continuing to take it. I hope you are one of the people who have no problems on it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. K xox
  • Like so many treatments for bc, reactions vary wildly. I’m in my 6th year on letrozole and have had no aches, pains, flushes or anything of that sort. I do have vaginal dryness but that reaction may be compounded by age (at least now if not when it started). Oestrogen cream is helping. Give it a shot. If the side effects are too unpleasant, a change of prescription may help. You never know till you try. Best wishes.
  • Not everyone has a hard time of it! Here's hoping you are one that sails through!
Try not to read others experiences but rather try it out and see how you go!
    Best wishes
  • @Cafrini60 dont stress until you have any worries about it  yourself.
I have been on it for almost 12 months , side effects for me are minimal  , hip pain & thumb pain ( I already had some) so who is to say what causes it ! I am a little more fatigued than usual & a few hot flushes here & there  but certainly not as bad as some get it . (who i feel for)
Hope it goes well for you , best of luck x
