Lat Dorsi reconstruction

Hi. I’m booked in for a unilateral lat dorsi recon in a few weeks and trying to get organised. I need a soft front opening bra and was hoping someone could suggest a good one. Any other tips for my hospital experience and recovery would be great too.

  • Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm about to drive my husband to hospital for prostate cancer surgery so will grab all the positivity I can today   :)
  • A friend of mine had Lat Dorsi without Implant. She has a good result too. She was much smaller busted than I.  I was and am 18DD. You will be finished months earlier than I with the whole expander process. Sounds like a great plan you have
  • @deCourcy 👍. I don’t know why all the bras in the world don’t open at the front!
  • Thank you Fufan. I think this is what the PS was referring to. I have a couple of crop tops but he thought my mobility would be too compromised to wear them. I’ll visit K Mart next week. 😊.
  • @deCourcy (classy name): KMart  have a post surgery bra, zip opens at the front which I think is way easier than a crop top. They are soft and comfortable and I have just bought more to wear at home, 15 months post mastectomy.  I think they are 2 for $20.  (I have no financial interest here at all 😏).
  • Thanks girls. The more info shared the better I feel. Sounds like you sailed through the lat dorsi pretty well Abbydog. I was imagining it to be a lot tougher than the mastectomy. I’m not having expander or implant so will just be a little boob. The PS will work on symmetry 9 months after the initial recon.
  • I had Lat Dorsi to my mastectomy side last year. I had a prophylactic mastectomy, reduction to the other side at the same time of surgery.
But in relation to the Lat Dorsi alone. I had 3 wound drains to that side. It wasn't much worse than the original Mastectomy, even though there is the wound at the back too.
I had tissue expander and later the Implant exchange. I think that this is common or usual.
I had regular Paracetamol, with the stronger tablets as needed in addition.
I almost always had strong pain relief at bedtime. I slept mostly on my back as I had surgery both sides.
My Plastic surgeon told me to expect a seroma on my back wound. I did get one. I had it drained 4 times, and then my tissue expander filled gradually until I was happy with the size.
My photos are in the 'choosing reconstruction', called something like "Not suitable for DIEP'
You probably had an opening bra from your Mastectomy which you can reuse.
My surgeon suggested crop top type bras. Bonds make them.
Only problem is that they go over your head. I still use them sometimes.
The other problem is that they are hard to find in large sizes, should you need them.
I am very happy with the results.
I may have some Liposuction, under that arm and slightly to the back. She suggested this later or when I want now. She would Lipo fill middle/central part of the new breast to improve the shape.
But for now I am happy, and may not have this done.
    I will get nipple tattoos.
All the best for your surgery and recovery.
  • Hi @deCourcy
If you ask to join the “Choosing Breast Recinstruction” private group there are lots of stories and photos worth reviewing.
Also the “ Reclaim your Curves” website has a lot of useful info including what to take yo hospital.
    My tips are:
    1. Take  it easy with the recovery - it’s a big surgery and your body needs time to recover - the first 36 hours were tough but then I turned a corner.
2 .Button down tops and loose pants are the go plus slip on slippers and shoes.
3.A small pillow to go under the seatbelt on the way home in the car.
    4. A wedge pillow for sleeping in your back. I got one on Amazon .
I am 18 months on and very happy I did it.
    Take care🌺
