Last Chemo:)

Well its not long till my last Chemo (TAC) and I can't wait. Wierdly enough I'm really nervous of the last one...go figure? iI start radiotherapy 3 weeks after that and am wondering if anyone can give me some tips.

I have a 2 year old and have to travel to Brisbane for treatments(1 1/2 hrs away). Was thinking of staying down there 3 nights per week cause its 5 days per week for 5 weeks but am a bit worried about how tired it actually makes you and being able to look after my little one by myself. I have friends to help look afte him while Im getting the treatment in the day but at night they have their own families to look after.

When I get Chemo it knocks me out for 3 days straight and I have to have my partner fully look after him because I can't stay awake. Don't want to be stuck away from home if it's too bad. Am I panicking over nothing?

  • Was wondering how you got on with the flooding and if it was affecting you Kay. It's great to hear your sister is ok as you know the area of murpheys creek was cut off in the end. It's so scary when your family are directly involved. You feel sorry for people when your watching it on the news but when its happeneing to you it's all so surreal. We're not far from where your sister is but didn't have the flash flooding they had. My sister in Forest Hill wasn't so lucky but at least their house is still standing if not a wee bit muddy. Will definately be staying in Bris 3 nights per week with my little one through Radiation, just too difficult to go back and forth each day. Will have to suck it and see how the treatment goes. Oh well, take care

  • Thanks Moira

Spoke too soon with the high tides in Brisbane the radiation was cancelled today which was a blow but think they may have had a problem with staff too. Have to ring in the morning to find out if it's a go. Luckily the flooding is not as bad as first thought so am sure we will be ok tomorrow. Just having a glass of that delicious wine!!

  • I know what you mean Sarah. We were hit hard up here with major flooding and my radio app had to be cancelled due to us being flooded in. Devestation for alot of people around here although we are fine.

On a lighter note, it's great wine and beer are starting to taste great I really miss enjoying a glass or 2 and cannot wait for dexamethasone to be rid of my body, it knocks me rotten. Glad yr teatment is going great sounds alot easier than chem, but what isn't hey? I'm staying at springhill close to hospital but maybe when I get my dates we may be able to catch up for coffee.

Take care and stay safe while travelling  Holly

  • Thanks Moira, I feel a whole lot better now. Will definately try to make it later in the day sounds like it'll be alot easier. Have had a bit more to contend with at the moment as have been in flood zone in Laidley. We are all ok but my poor sister lives in Forest Hill and her house is a mess. My Radio appintment for the 1st info day had to be cancelled and not sure if will be able to get through for last chemo on the right date. Now it seems so silly to be worried about last one when there is sooooo much more going on with poor people who have lost loved ones, pets and homes.Take care Holly

  • thinking of you all up there, and hope you manage to get your treatment, then you can get it over an done with and move on. GREAT to hear Lynne you have got your tastbuds back for the beer and wine, with all this bad weather you are having up there, i am sure you would need a glass (or three lol).

GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!!!!! with the treatment and the weather. X

  • Hi Holly

I just started radiation in Brisbane on 6th Jan and as Moira says it is nothing compared to chemo. So far all ok but have only had 4 sessions. Now have to contend with a wee bit of water between our house (about 25kms from Hospital) and the hospital. The hospital have been great ringing to check I was ok and advising about road closures all good at the moment. I think Moira has given you very sound advice about having later appointments I have mine after 6 pm as driving to the city and parking are all better and my hubbie can come too. They have appointments up to about 10pm except at the moment with the floods they are closing at 8pm. Where are you staying? If you want to give your friends a break I am always up for a coffee and a chat. Also we have the Strathpine Coffee club which meet every month so if you are up when we meet next you should come along it's a great get together.

My skin so far has been great slapping on the sorbolene can't see anything yet but the nurse tells me it takes 2 weeks before any redness appears.

I think you'll find this a lot easier at least there is no horrid mouth, no dexamethasone, no hair loss and my taste buds are beginning to like wine and beer again!!

Good luck and stay in touch.

  • hi holly, well i know what you mean, feeling happy about finishing chemo, but also a bit scared i was the same, i think while we are having treatment we feel people are looking after us, also i was ill with chemo and was worried about radio, but it was fine for me, i was told to shower only with sorbalene, and then use it on my breast, i did this and all was well burn wise, the side effects really just kicked in after week 3  (i had 6 weeks) and that was only a bit of tiredness, when this came on i had a lie down for 1/2 hour and seemed to come good, so maybe you could time your sessions as lat as possible, then you will be able to sleep it off overnight. The good thing is it takes you longer to get dressed and undressed than it does the treatment, so hardly any time is spent at the hospital, if you stay down there, maybe you could meet up with some of the girls from here for a coffee if you are going to be on your own. let us know how you are going, hope all goes well. at least you will be on the last lap of treatment... GOOD LUCK Moira
